Ok, I'm about ready to throw in the towel after a five year search. Are there any RA bachelor completion programs in general studies out there that are inexpensive? By inexpensive, I'm thinking under $150 a credit hour. It seems alot of schools get you in, only to raise the tuition the following year so you can't afford it. I just spoke with Fort Hayes State and they are raising their tuition to $100 per credit hour in the fall, although that is still quite reasonable. I would like to find at least one or two other schools comparable to them. I would prefer an internet mode of study, but at this point I'll consider other options.

I suppose I could buy another updated John Bear book, but I already have two.

    Thanks for any leads.

Try Thomas Edison State College's BA in Liberal Studies. I believe liberal studies and general studies are roughly the same. I'm pretty sure their courses are much less than the $150 per credit threshold you mentioned. It may be even cheaper if you pay the comprehensive tuition but I'm not sure.

How close are you to completion? Complete your degree through the exam option. You definitely get more bang for your per credit dollar. Thomas Edison and Charter Oak have been mentioned. There is also Excelsior (http://www.excelsior.edu) and can effectively complete a RA degree sooner. Look into AP, Excelsior, and GRE subject exams.

Hmm thats wierd only thing I can find when I look for cheap tuition is BGS degrees or BSS (bachelor of speciailized studies).

Its per quarter hour but OhioU has a BSS degree (self design degree basically) and its 85 per quarter credit for their web, correspondence, and credit by exam options (that equates to roughly $113 per semester hour if it WERE semester).

    heres the URL

    http://www.ohiou.edu/independent/spec_is.htm

Brigham Young University has a BGS w/ preset areas of emphasis (I don't remember what they are. One was pyschology I believe).

    $98 per semester hour here.

    http://ce.byu.edu/bgs/costs.html

Fort Hayes State University has a BGS w/ concentrations in several fields. $83 per semester credit. They mention certain courses have media fees as well but its 30 per credit.

    Who else....

Eastern Oregon University, I think, has a BGS and fairly cheap tuition as well (again it is based on a quarterly system so dont let the cheap tuition fool you).

Thats all I can think of. Do what I did to find these degrees:

    http://distancelearn.excelsior.edu/ <--- Go here.

Select the cheapest tuition for the search and put ALL for every drop down menu.

Search through the schools listed through one of their courses and search their website to see their program offerings.

    Best Regards,

    Bill

Maybe I should of read your message better, smiller49. I didn't realize you mentioned Fort Hayes. So, they are raising their tuition? Shame too, Fort Hayes seemed it was pretty liberal on its credit evaluation on ACE military credit.

Thanks for all the many quick replies. Some of the suggestions are new, and some schools I have already been enrolled at. I'm in my mid 40's, with 233 undergrad credit hours and an associate degree. I had been waiting the past 5 years for an AFFORDABLE completion program in Occupational Health and Safety to pop up, but I'm growing impatient. I just heard of North Carolina Ag and Tech's new OSH program, so that is a lead, but I haven't been able to get ahold of the program administrator. In the past I have enrolled at Ohio University, but since most of my credits are lower division, much didn't transfer and I still had 80 credits to complete. I have talked extensively with Regents (now Excelsior?), and Liberty University was very good on the transfer credits, but the only real option I have is to study psychology, which I'm not real thrilled about. And so the story goes with each school I have looked at...too expensive, too many hours to complete, degee major options don't match up...etc.

Perhaps I am being too picky. My friends and family all think I deserve an honorary degree in "Distance College Studies" or that I should major in it. I have a good career going in Safety and Health, and I really want the bachelor's for personal satisfaction. My employer would like to see me complete it, but is not willing to help with the tuition at this point.

Many this additional info will help with any suggestions....thanks again!

Hello, Here is my suggestion that is currently working for my husband. Transfer 80 credits toward a BA in Liberal Studies at TESC. Use FEMA credits to fill up the free elective area. (18) This will leave you with 22. I am sure you have papers, certificates and proof of knowledge around. Use them in portfolios. If you haven't taken an Analysis of Lit course take the CLep. Good Luck with the Quest. Feel free to contact me about TESC. Hille
