I've been searching for a distance learning certificate that would complement the field of environmental consulting, but specifically in the oil and gas industry. I see certs in remediation and wetlands management Soil and Water Science Department, University of Florida and those seem like a good fit, but I've concluded that some of you might have some other thoughts.

I would prefer for it to be RA and inexpensive if possible with some sort of focus on the oil and gas industry. Maybe I'm just being too specific, which is why I've come to you for help. I cannot find anything other than general environmental science or ones like the UF on above. Any help is appreciated.

Also, I apologize for creating a new thread, but I'm not sure if people had seen the question in my Hazwoper thread.

Just a quick bump because I've thought of a few different options, if I can find them.

If you were trying to get yourself prepared for environmental consulting (oil and gas specific), while already having a background in safety, security, public health, and emergency preparedness, would you rather:

    1. Look for something like I posted above (remediation/wetlands management certs)
    2. Look for an online/distance cert in environmental law.
    3. Consider an online/distance cert in environmental engineering. This option might prove extremely difficult because I think most programs require an undergrad in some engineering discipline.
    4. Consider an industry accepted credential and bypass school altogether.

Also, If you know of any programs please list them. As always, thanks.

i just posted a message in the india thread about a new cert program in wetlands from ignou. not exactly what you're looking for but sometimes water in the desert is good news regardless of it's source.

Environmental projects typically have a lot of regulation and oversight by government agencies. The people in responsible charge of environmental projects usually have to be state licensed, typically as Professional Engineers or Professional Geologists. So environmental consulting firms tend to hire people with degrees in (1) civil/environmental engineering, or (2) geology/earth sciences.

Unfortunately, these are not fields that are commonly associated with online/distance learning. And there may not be any online certifications that will effectively substitute for a traditional engineering or geoscience degree, as far as licensing boards and environmental firms are concerned.

If you don't have a background in engineering or geology, then the best option might be the Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) or other credentials offered by the Institute of Hazardous Materials Management. The CHMM is an industry accepted credential, though it is not a state license like the PE or PG.

Not exactly what I think your looking for but this cert from TEEX came to mind. (CSHO) Certified Safety and Health Official
    TEEX CSHO Program

They have an Oil/Gas Endorsement to that designation as well:
    Oil & Gas Endorsement

It's all offered by the Extension Service...don't know if that means its all online or not though. I have no idea if its recognized by potential employers. TEEX is certainly well thought of though.
