Hello DItes, I am here again with my troubles. Please help me. I was very glad that after battling with FEMA exams rejection and non availability of CLEP in my country, we finally decided to go for a community college AA in General Studies to transfer to the TESC BSBA General mgt and BA Journalism respectively. Though I asked a counselor about the degree plan that meets the BA Journalism program, she told me TESC has not been helpful with providing them with info on courses that will transfer. This is a part of her email to me: ''Unfortunately, Thomas Edison State College does not provide us any transfer information on which classes are best to take here in order to get a degree from them. I have contacted them several times in the past few years and have not been provided any help for students trying to choose appropriate classes.''

Now this is my problem. After deciding I was gonna settle for NMJC, I read on some threads online that unless NMJC has an articulation agreement with TESC, that we may not be able to transfer our credits (our AA in General Studies) to TESC degrees. We are about to pay our tuition and register for classes next week. Please those of you who are knowledgeable about TESC and transfer articulation matters, please help. Do you know whether TESC and NMJC has articulation agreement? Is it possible that after spending time, energy and money, we may not be able to transfer our AA General Studies into TESC? Please do not be fed up with my questions. Thanks

NMJC is regionally accredited and most if not all of the credits will transfer to TESC (though TESC does limit CC transfer to 80 credits I believe). TESC is one of what we generally consider "the Big 3" they specialize in degree completion. You don't need an articulation agreement for this....heck is generally true that most credits from a regionally accredited school will transfer to other regionally accredited schools (there are some major exceptions....but not at any of the Big 3).

To know what to take basically compare the AA degree at NMJC to the general ed classes required in the first two years at TESC and you'll be fine.

Note that NMJC won't likely take any FEMA.....so do your 60-80 CC credits at NMJC, complete your FEMA as the journalism degree will allow and the rest will be "major" classes applied to TESC (most of which you can also take elsewhere BTW)

Thank you a lot for the clarification, Rebel. I get it better. I am still trying to learn the ropes when it comes to US educational systems. :) I understand that TESC limits CC credits to 80. To get an NMJC AA, I need 62 credits. If I understand you correctly, does it mean that aside the 62 credits required for AA at NMJC I could still take more credits there and they will all appear on my transcript? Or would you advise that I take additional credits at other CC to add up to the 62 and make it 80? Thanks

You can use 80 cc credits at TESC they can come from NMJC or elsewhere. You can also bring in unlimited 4 year college credits such as independent study courses from university of Idaho or Arkansas, csu pueblo, LSU, BYU. These are great for providing the 30 upper level credits you will need for a bachelor's at tesc.

Clep and dsst are also unlimited at tesc and charter oak. Be careful not to duplicate credits!

Just out of curiousity...why are you pursuing a degree through TESC if you are already working on an LL.B. through the University of London?

I hope this doesn't come off as a snotty remark. It's not intended to. I'm not attempting to rebuke AV8R or speak for the OP either. Apologies to Amnestylaw if I'm butting in here:

The OP was asked this exact question before - and answered it fully in this thread:

    Cheers.

Thanks. I already have some credits from my studies (both current studies and previous ones at my home country university, PF, and Law). I will equally take some Saylor classes (the three NCCR recommended) courses. By the time I add my NMJC credits with that from Saylor, PF and so on, I should meet with up almost all of the required credits. Much appreciated, Rebel.

:) Johann has helped me clarified my position once more. Thanks for your question. Sometimes, people take the roughest part to their destinations.

Amnesty, I'm all about NMJC and finding a quick cheap way to get that bachelors....but I really think you need to have your credit evaluated and apply at one or two schools to see exactly where you are. You may be closer than you think.

I would urge you to check both COSC and TESC....I think COSC might be more affordable in the end.

Are you aware that NMJC "maxes out" their tuition? Once you pay for 12 credits the rest of the courses completed in that semester are only charged the fee's (about $60 a course I believe). NMJC runs 2 8 week half mesters every semester....so you could conceivably complete 12 credits first 8 weeks and 12 more second 8 weeks.....thats 24 credits/semester and a huge potential money saver for you.

Aside the fact that they are very affordable, that NMJC offers two 8 weeks semesters is one of the reasons I am crazy about them. I was browsing through NMJC available courses/classes recently and found only few 8 weeks available. The majority of the online classes available at the moment are for 16 weeks or so. I guess most classes are filled already since registration for FALL semester was on since April and people must have been hijacking classes like ''madness'' :D I really intend maximizing my opportunities here at NMJC and of course I intend to evaluate my transcripts. I studied Mass Communication from a Polytechnic for 3 semesters in my country. Most of the courses were similar (going by the TESC BA Journalism degree plan) to those at TESC and I assumed I could get credits for them. I also studied Law for two years in my country before transferring to Uni London distance learning. I intend getting my Law transcripts for evaluations too even though am not sure I could get credits for law in a course that is non legal or law related. Do you think TESC or Charter Oak will evaluate credits without putting for their programs? I mean can I go ahead at this point to ask for an evaluation when I am not fully ready with all the credits needed?? At least Uni London was not ready to consider my previous studies until I applied to the school then. In your opinion, whom should I contact in regards to the evaluation- Office of the Registrar I guess...? Thanks Rebel, you as well as other DItes have been a blessing to many.

I don't know much about foreign credit evaluation, I'm sure someone here does though, I understand independent evaluators do it and it can then be transcribed at a US school. There is little point in jumping in till your evaluated though....I would think that 5 years of college would amount to something. At least only take courses your pretty sure you need till your fully evaluated.

I totally agree with you that I need to channel my energy and time on courses I need to take. I am not planning to take Algebra (I have taken that at PF) and EGL 1 and 2(I have credits for English 1 and 2 at my previous home country college). Majority of the classes I have credits in at my previous college are in Journalism area and not Gen Ed. As I go on with NMJC, I will take courses that are not conquered yet. Actually, my initial plan was to finish the whole NMJC AA courses and earn 62 credits and present everything in case there might be problem with rejection of some of my previously earned credits. I aware about World Evaluation Services as one of the organizations that evaluate foreign credentials. I will, of course, utilize their services when the time comes.
