Any opinions on online History MA programs? I've taught social studies in New York City for 21 years. I'm planning to retire in four years and would like to teach as an adjunct at a community or four-year college. My masters degrees are in liberal studies and school administration, so I need to obtain one in history to teach on the college level. Is anyone familiar with American Military University? Would colleges respect a degree from a for-profit school? How about Pittsburg State University in Kansas? Any other recommendations? I'd appreciate any feedback.

My son has just enrolled in the Military History program at AMU (actually at APU but it's all the same thing...under APUS). It is a solid program! They have an AA, BA, and MA in Military History or an AA, BA, and MA in History (with several concentrations). When it comes to History, in my opinion, they have a solid grad program.

I've heard a lot of really good things about them. I think you would do well with a degree from there.

    Hi Mike,

A warm welcome to Degree Info. Here's some info on your posts not showing up: http://www.degreeinfo.com/general-distance-learning-discussions/35100-new-users-ask-where-did-my-posts-go.html

Although there are some exceptions, most traditional colleges do not look favorably at for-profit schools or most any online degree. A few have managed to land positions with those degrees, but many have not been successful. Your experience in teaching would probably help to mitigate that somewhat. Would it be enough? I don't know.

The other problem is that it is really tough to get an adjunct position. There is a lot of competition out there. There are a lot of people with doctorate degrees taking the jobs that were once held by those with master's degrees. In the past, I tried to get in as an adjunct and I was not even given an interview. At the time, I had a master's degree. Although I hold a higher degree now, I have not tried again. So my info is a few years old.

In history, let me totally agree with SurfDoctor. Totally. It is a dog eat dog world out there. I just looked at the AHA website for jobs and they are FEW and FAR between and that is for full timers at universities. I did not even check with community colleges. The competition is keen for those too. Many folks with PhDs in history are now teaching at the community college level (as SurfDoctor stated) that in the past would not even think about it. I had to work from one class to two to now three a semester. I have been teaching at the same community college (at that level) for 8 years. My future PhD has no guarentee of anything. I would just say, keep at it. Someone will take you eventually. Be prepared to teach for awhile before you finally move up.

I think you will go far. You have the critical experience in college education and your doctorate will open many doors for you. Newbies will have a much harder time than you.

You are kind. It is much appreciative. We shall see. Right now, being a librarian has paid the bills.

Yes, I posted in two forums because I wasn't sure which was more appropriate for a question about history degrees. Thanks for the assistance in both places!

And how are things coming along with your PhD?

The General Distance Learning Discussions sub-forum is probably more appropriate than the Education, Teaching, and Related Degrees sub-forum, but that's okay.
