They also have a FULLY online MBA degree program (which I begin next trimester after graduating from USQ):

  4. Bear in mind that not all of the distance education programs at UNE (or USQ for that matter) are "online." I considered the UNE Master of Computer Studies (and may still do this after I complete the USQ MProfComp).

Correct - and rememebr that 'on line' can be a pain in the butt at times - I prefer hard copy material and submit my papers electronically. This way you get exactly what the f2f students get - their model at UNE is that their is no DE division as such - every department and every faculty member has a mixed load of f2f and external.

However, I could venture to suggest to them that they have incorrectly advertised:rolleyes:

  6. I found this statement interesting: "About 75 per cent of UNE's 16,400 students - including 200 PhD candidates - study by distance education." (click for source)

It was set up more or less for this purpose initially. Faculty thorughout Australia needed to be able to study for higher degrees and UNE provided that facility in Accounting (originally the 72 unit MEc and then for a few years the 72 unit MAcc) and Education (96 unit post graduate BEd, 48 unit coursework MEd and 72 unit MEd [Honours]), and other disciplines like Health Management and so on. Consequently, you will find most Accounting and educaion faculties in Australia have someone with a UNE Masters degree.

It's programs are not for wimps and can be quite ball breakers at times. All you need to do is compare the assessment requirements to other places and ofetn they are 2-3 times as much, and don't think that they shrick on the rigour front.

Their EdD in interesting. It has a 50-70,000 word thesis which on the upper limit is PhD size at most places. But then you have 4 coursework subjects of 10,000 words each, but they will expect a massive research background to these papers - they are NOT essays.

They encourage 'active learning' so you can negotiate fairly well as to what you do within a framework drawing on your work experience. For example you may elect to take 3 papers in a 500 level subject of say 2,000, 3,500, and 5000 words, or do a combined paper on 1 topic of say 11-13,000 words. This could cover a project that you are doing vocationally so it kills 2 birds with the one stone. On the other hand, in my BEd I had a year long subject that required 9 papers plus a contract with my college that also required me to do a practicum of 90 hours supervised teaching in taxation law. Phew!!

Ingrid Moses is the Vice Chancellor and demands 100%+ from everyone. She will not tolerate any slacking off on quality and believes that in the end qulaity will win. They have no trouble getting their numbers, so they will persist with the modus operandi.

The City is home to some of the States elite and most expensive private schools, so in a sense is an educaional city. there is no industry base to speak of. The Uni owns the biggest pub in town and the picture theatre is in the university precinct.

The faculty are well respected internationally and international interchange is a big thing there. When you line up to get your work marked or publish a paper, it will be where it matters globally in the professional/academic area - not just anywhere being nowhere in particular.

it is a great choice for anyone really serious about their educaion, but doesn't fall into the Lawrie Miller class of offering.
