I am doing a program through Aspen U. Don't know how that works in California. I have found the material to be on the money so far and the bureaucracy seems easy to deal with.

So first you need to find out what is required for licesure in California. Then I would start looking at the local Cali schools. They usually have good prices.

You might want to look into this one. Good school, obviously! Program costs $5,800 but there are quite a number of courses involved in the certificate. On a per-credit basis it might be around $210 a crack - no pun intended. That doesn't seem out-of-line for such a well-known school.

Certificate Program in Alcohol and Drug Abuse Studies — UC Berkeley Extension

    A reassuring quote:

"This drug and alcohol certificate program is approved by the California Foundation for the Advancement of Addiction Professionals (CFAAP), the educational board for California Association of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors (CAADAC)."

Thank you for contacting Penn Foster, the world's leader in distance education!

The tuition is $899.00, if paid in full the tuition is $661.00. The minimum payment plan is $39.00 down and $49.00 a month.

Yes - exactly as you say, but:

    (1) Warguns' request was for the "cheapest online course approved for California license."
    (2) City Vision College offers a 2-year degree completion program at $6,000 per year so... around $12,000 complete.
    (3) The certificate program the O.P. found is approved and costs under $1,000

I'm sure City Vision College offers a good program, though, and I appreciate your mentioning it. Just not what the OP was after, in respect to cost.

City Vision College (DETC) offers a certificate program as well. Ten 3-credit courses at $600 each = $6,000. That's slightly more than RA UC Berkeley charges for a cert. leading to the same license.

Seems strange that a certificate approved for the same license is 30 credits at some schools and costs $6,000 while at another school one only costs a few hundred dollars. Yes, I know Penn Foster is cheap - but less than one-sixth the price of an approved cert. at another DETC school?

Something needs to be looked at carefully, here. Will the $800 Penn Foster certificate actually get you to the same place licensing-wise as the $6,000 one? It's WAY too much of a difference to gloss over or ignore.

OK, OK, I just can't stop myself from making this comment. Anybody who has read my posts for a while knowns that I am cheap. I don't want to spend a penny if I don't have to. But maybe somewhere in this discussion there's room for the question "Are you actually learning anything or is it just "gimmee the cert." I mean, we are actually setting these people free on the public as health care providers. Is anyone interested in the QUALITY of the program or is cheap the Queen no matter what? Maybe one program has more credits and is more expensive because they're actually expecting you to learn a bunch of stuff rather than just satisfying rock bottom minimum requirements. It is healthcare, right?

Bless the folks that are involved in this aspect of healthcare! I look at it as a calling!

That's perfectly OK - so am I. And so are a bunch of us --as well we all know.

Apparently so. And with the cheapie course - that might scare me - if I lived in California...and if I were an addict!

Warguns (OP) : "Cheapest online course approved for California license."

Of course. What I can't understand is how (or if) an $800 quickie can get you to the same place license-wise as a $6,000 RA 30-unit program. It can't. There has to be a catch...or should be, anyway!

Yes. And this topic is beginning to scare me, even though I'm far away from California!

I just figured the difference. With the $800 certificate, you don't get to treat Lindsay Lohan. :jester:

Yes - bless all the competent, qualified, caring ones -- and damn all the charlatans, self-serving, money-grubbing fakes and quacks. Same with all other health care disciplines.

You must have had some bad experiences with "fakes" in mental health! For the most part, State laws are very strict when it comes to mental health and counseling requiring not only an accredited education, national certification but 1000's of hours of direct supervision. You should certainly report them if this has been your experience!

Well, as far as I can tell, no one really gets to treat Lohan.

    That's a cheap shot.

Not a cheap shot but poorly phrased! Perhaps California has issues?
