Sats/unizul?

I am trying to finalize my decision as to where to study to receive a Master's qualification in theological studies. My two main concerns are (1) time and (2) money, as they are with most distance learners. My third concern is quality. I refuse to get any unaccredited degree because I may use the qualification to teach in seminary some day. It appears to me that my best bet is to receive either an MA or an MTh from UNIZUL through SATS. I know that UNIZUL is SAQA approved and fairly well established. I would like any input, positive or negative, as to getting a theology degree from UNIZUL. By the way, I currently hold a Bachelor of Christian Education from the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. Thanks.

I'm not sure if the SATS path is still available. Because of the restructuring of the RSA institutions, SATS and Unizul may not have the same relationship any longer. Ask Reuben at [email protected] about the current relationship. If you get in, I'm sure you'll be grandfathered-in later if the relationship changes.

If that path is closed, you can enroll directly into Unizul, of course.

I also don't know if the Sats/Unizul path is open, it may still be. There are many unknowns about the restructuring. But even if it is gone, there are several South African possibilities. As Bill mentioned, Unizul itself, Unisa, and I am sure others. I know a professor at Abilene Christian University who has both masters and doctorate from university of Natal. (He attended on location, though). So you might check them all out.

Over the past week or so, I have been in email contact with Reuben van Rensburg at SATS and Prof. Edwards of the UNIZUL Psych Dept. As as been noted in other threads about UNIZUL and SATS, Reuben is VERY responsive. It appears to me that SATS and the University are alive and well, altho I'm not familiar with details of any restructuring. I'll probably be pursuing thesis-only doctoral work thru UNIZUL, altho Reuben will handle the enrollment process thru SATS. I'm very impressed with, and appreciative of, the "customer" service I've received so far.

I'm glad to hear this. As you mention, as I have said in other threads and as many others have said, also, UNIZUL and SATS should definitely receive high marks for their responsiveness. They seldom leave you waiting for very long. That statement is intended to cover more than just the Theology dept.

I will probably choose UNIZUL for my MA in English, and the primary reason that they were chosen over UNISA or other DL school will be their personal attention and interaction. I will decide for sure (but my mind is pretty much made up), after I get to Europe this summer.
Good luck on your studies, and keep us posted.

Thank you, and good luck to you as well, Clint.

I have found this site interesting for general info about SA and its university system. There are links to sites about all the universities.

Yeah, this is a good site. I have used it to do research on several of the universities. In fact, it was through this site that I first contacted UNIZUL and Dr Hooper in the English Dept. So I do recommend it to anyone interested in SA possibilities.

Don't I remember from another post that your PhD is in Psychology? If so, (since you are working with SATS) is it with a religious flavor? just wondering

Thanks for your interest, Clint. Psych is my field of interest, but I don't have a doctorate - - yet. Hopefully down the road a piece ...

Here is how I wrote about my interests in contacting Reuben.

I have an MA in psychology from Antioch University (State of Ohio, USA). My field of interest is best described by the title of a book written by Dr. Lionel Corbett (Pacifica Graduate Institute, California, USA): “The Religious Function of the Psyche.” I would like to take an interdisciplinary (primarily Jungian psychology, mythology, and history of the Judaic-Christian tradition) approach to my work.

Very interesting. Sorry for the confusion, I knew you didn't have a PhD yet, but rather meant that was the area in which you were going to be working. Doesn't speak well of my communication ability, does it :D . You would never know that my BA in English was accompanied by a Communication minor.... Oh well.

Thanks for explaining the connection between the Psychology and Religous aspects. As a missionary, that just made me curious ;) . Honestly, my knowledge of Psychology (as a discipline) is limited to what I hear on Frasier... But the concept of your field of interest is thought provoking to say the least.

    Anyway, keep after it.

This morning I had a brief email exchange with Reuben in which he included this:

    "Dear Larry

Let me answer the question by attaching a page from my recently completed Doctoral thesis ... "

So - - congrats to Reuben!!! When he provides info about the UNIZUL/SATS programs, he certainly speaks from direct experience! What a man!
