got a new packet today from UNISA with all the registration information. as it was when I looked at it about a year ago, I feel I should get at least 3 credit hours for figuring this stuff out...

can someone help me understand the process for applying for the EdD program. make it plain, please, i think trying to figure out this stuff has cost me some brain cells

Well, doctoral work is supposed to be rigorous - so I've heard. That must say something for UNISA since the rigor begins before you even apply to the program.

On a serious note though, would you keep us updated on how the process goes as you apply to UNISA. It is one institution I'll consider for doctoral work.

Sorry, I can't really help you through it. Some posters on this forum will come to your rescue shortly, I'm sure.

    All the Best...:D

Hey, I worked at Oakwood from 1986-89 in the Computer Center. I was a programmer with Sam Pullins. Your name sounds familiar and I think I know you. Did you go to Pastor in California or Oregon?

Your best bet is to follow the link provided by Bill Highsmith. When you make your initial inquiry you'll likely receive a very polite and prompt reply directing you to complete the registration form and submit it to their offices. You're not likely to get much more than that. There are very explicit instructions for the completion of the registration form embedded on the UNISA web site. I believe that it's worth the time to find them, if only to confirm your suspicions that you're actually completing the form correctly. I also believe that the completion of the registration/admission process is the first step in proving to the school that you might actually be able to complete a doctoral program :D
I recently (1 month ago) emailed UNISA and asked if it was ever possible to set up an alternate examination site (so that I didn't have to fly to New York) they have yet to answer my question. At this point I do not expect them to answer my question, at least not until I am properly registered. Maddening, no? This, I think, is "the catch." UNISA...a respectable GAAP degree at an unbelievably affordable cost...you knew there had to be a catch, right?

As I've never been one to leave "well enough" alone, here's the link for the directions on completing the registration form:
    http://www.unisa.ac.za/study/info/doenload/index.html
In the section entitled "Postgraduate registration" click on the selection entitled "Registration Information Brochure." It's a pdf file. Take my advice, print it out. Good luck,

  7. I don't think that you'll be able to establish an alternative exam site on an ad hoc basis. I believe that there are US exam sites in Washington, Texas (Austin?), LA, NYC, Oklahoma, Chicago, and one other midwestern state. Plus Canadian sites in Ottawa, Vancouver, and Toronto.

    good work, I gave up

I'm glad you found out where the examination site is. I emailed and snailed mailed asking where the examination sites are in North America. Never got a response from unisa.
I did email the Canadian rep He was actually helpful. But did not know if it would be possible for me to drive the 60 miles to Montreal for a potential unisa testing site.
Is it bureaucracy, snobbishness, or incompetence?
    All the best!

I knew Sam Pullins. And you are correct, we may in fact know each other. I went to be a pastor in Washington State. I also worked as a pastor briefly in California. It's a small world.

Send me a private message so we can catch up.

Yes, I'll bet you're right. Now if you can answer the bonus question I'll give you a cookie:
Where are the University of London examination sites?

OK, so what's available for us East Coast people?

  13. You can fly from BOS to LAX for $370 round trip (American Trans Air).

No need to thank me for the helpful tip. :D

  14. Taft is also a participant in the Consortium of College Testing Centers run by the National College Testing Association. I suggested that Unisa consider this as a source of acceptable examination centers in the U.S., and the local Unisa representative said that he would forward the idea for consideration in Pretoria. Hah.

Yeah, well, I know that I'm painting a picture of myself as a cheap bastard (perhaps I should say extremely frugal?) but here's the issue. If I'm considering a BA in Philosophy program from UNISA or the U of London, one of the factors to consider is "how far am I going to have to travel in order to take exams?" With UNISA it seems that NYC is the destination. My only problem with that is that it's going to add a substantial cost to the program (especially if you take only one course at a time - you have to travel to NYC maybe 10-12 times during the course of your program - a significant increase in expense, and a general pain in the butt). If the U of London has an exam center in Boston (or even Providence, etc) then the London program automatically becomes cheaper than the UNISA program. So far, neither school has answered my email enquiry on this subject.

  16. Exam Centres:
    • For London, call 011 44 20 7862 8360 or 8361 or 8362.

For Unisa, call 011 27 12 429 2791 (or [email protected], but as you have discovered they may not respond)

I am afraid UNISA tries not to give any reply regarding new application due to the merger issue. I have been waiting for reply since .........few months
    ago.

Another SA U is quiet aggressive and has already assigned a supervisor to me before I make up my mind to submit my application.

    WHAT IS THIS OTHER ONE?

Thanks Gert. Interestingly enough, U of London just responded to my email inquiry and said that they use the Consortium of College Testing Centers (as you mentioned in your previous response) as their US examination sites. Anyone interested in finding the examination site nearest them can look it up at:
    https://testing.byu.edu.Consortium
The lone site in Massachusetts is at Mount Wachusett Community College located in Gardner. It's about a 90 minute drive for me; significantly better than having to fly to NYC.
