The University of Phoenix? Again? Will it ever stop? Let's beat this dead horse to death. ;)

This thread is the result of a healthy conversation with a fellow DegreeInfo.com poster on another thread on this forum.

I had great difficulty trying to devise what questions to ask. After all, the issues are so big and there are too many variables. Some of the discussed issues have included:
    • How bad (or good) the UoP's classes are (or aren't). This has included their online classes as well as their residential classes.
    • Whether (or not) the UoP is the bottom of the barrel of RA schools.
    • How far a UoP doctoral graduate can go with a UoP degree, due to the stigma that is (or is not) attached to that university.
    • ect. ect. ect.
All of these variables cannot be put into a poll, so I have narrowed it down to three simple questions:Obviously, this poll leaves little margin for other opinions. Either you like the UoP or you don't. What is your assessment of the UoP?

After this thread ends, I doubt I'll kick this dead horse any more. Also, I don't want to create enemies. I just want to learn what the public perception is (or at least the perception on this forum).

    Bullshit!

Why all of the sudden that interest in learning about UoP's public perception? I mean, you only attended one class, you are not an alumni, and you are not considering UoP for another degree...

It is clear to me that your intention with this poll is simply to piss people off!

Why don't you just stop trying to knock a school that you have never attended? Just because you went to all these so-called "traditional" schools & disagree with University of Phoenix, why do you feel it is your duty to discredit them? You were probably passed over for a promotion by someone who got their degree from UoPhx & your're just jealous. Get over it.

The poll gave no intermediate option like its just an average RA school. Which I believe it is.

I've talked with people who have taught for them and students and it is very mixed as are the discussions in this board.

    My opinion.

Wow it always amazes me how upset some people get when the quality of their college or university, and I use both words very cautiously in this forum. If we are ever to advance and bring distane education and or online education up to the level of respect that it could garner then we need to ask questions like this. UofP is not perfect, they have their problems just like any number of other universities and distance learning providers. However, when you are the biggest and have the most money to spend people have a tendency to look critically at what you do and its impact on the system as a whole. And in this case the UofP is the name that most people would associate with distance learning because they are the largest and most well known. What they do, and how they conduct themselves as an institution of higher learning affect how things are perceived today and what we will do for the future. If they are paving the way for all else to come great! If they are endangering distane education as we know it in the future by lowering standards and graduating everyone who walks through the door then thats another matter. At this time I do not have enough information to make an informed decision either way on this issue, but I do not think it is fair to ask someone to not question the UofP just because you might not like the answer to the question put forth. Are you worried about your UofP degree, if you are then maybe we need to investigate this issue further.

    What?

I am trying to figure out how "me again" is trying to discredit the U of Phoenix by having a poll which could give people the chance to say this is a great school.

Whether he was passed up for a promotion or did not attend U of P for more then one course is not relevant. Simply taking a poll is something anyone is free to do, especially when the U of P has been so frequently debated.

I think it would also be proper if the language was kept clean. I do not mean to act like the board moderator but please, demonstrate your intellect and make your points using debate not foul language and personal attacks

The poll lacks objectivity because one has to choose between two extremes. What you want us to do is to select one option from two impossible choices. University of Phoenix is neither an excellent school nor a terrible school. My advice to you, "me again", is to poll using lykert-type scale as shown below if you are not just bantering:

    1. Excellent
    2. Above average
    3. Average
    4. Below average
    5. Terrible

Yes Scott, you're right. It's too bad I can't edit it and start over.

If that is the case, you have to cancel this and start another poll. I am quite certain that majority will choose "no opinion".

I really think this is a good idea. I would suggesting scrapping the old poll and starting over with this.

Your motive for this poll has been unraveled in another thread. While I have no association with U of P, I believe that if your story about U of P is true, the school would have lost its RA long time ago.

    UoP

"Me Again" ... so I must ask myself why you are so obsessed with the UoP? Any school - every school - has it good and bad points. And the degree from UoP (either undergraduate or graduate) is no better or worse than the person who holds that degree. Reading your "opinions" and thoughts on the UoP, I am proud not to call you a "fellow alumni" of the UoP. I am PROUD of my undergraduate degree from the UoP. I am PROUD enough of that degree that I have chosen UoP for my graduate degree.

The piece of paper is as good as the person who holds that degree. I know that in my present position, I am a credit to the UoP ... that my employers look at the quality of my work and my work ethic and say "Wow ... the UoP really puts forth a good product".

So it really all comes down to the person .. there are some real "duds" that Harvard and Yale probably do not advertise as being graduates ...

We do tend to discuss U of P to death around here. Maybe they are mediocre or on the bottom end of RA schools (5th tier even) but they are still RA and meet the needs of those who want a piece of paper that says graduate. They must be meeting at least the minimal requirements for RA or I agree with Scott that they would no longer be RA. Regional Accreditors have shown the willingness to revoke accreditation so they can't be an unmitigated disaster. I have heard stories from an instructor there that makes you wonder about grade inflation but heck Harvard has grade inflation.

To view the more objective poll, click here.

I apoligize for two polls, but I want to try and be objective.

Yep, you obviously failed any research classes you took at these great instiutions you attended and, if you did an actual research thesis, the quality of that would be highly suspect as well. You should have attended UoP and taken a few classes more than you did, but evidently, you wanted an easier way out and it shows all too clearly in the lack of quality of your survey and your thoughts.

Btw, I suspect that the corresponant you mention is that self-same idgit who waxed peoetic about how bad UoP was and was using information covered in dinosaur dung and so far removed from the current UoP as to be ludicrous, yet that did not prevent him from shooting off his ignorant mouth too.

    Re: What?

Well made observation, and I fully agree with your summation. The use of foul and off color language only diminishes one's position--even if it is otherwise legitimate.

    Mr. Jim Lane,

The one and only class that I completed at the University of Phoenix was in "Research Methods." Ironically, this course alledgedly taught us how to conduct polls. Even more ironic, the instructor gave me an "A" in the class.

Jim, what are you really trying to tell me? ;)
