Good Morning, Here is what I can share with you. Jones International has an option for nine credits by portfolio. This is after a 500 dollar class fee that is a manditory non-credit situation. The class is quite involved. My daughter, age 23 is trying this. So far she has achieved three credits. Six have been rejected and will be resubmitted. The upside to this is that she has researched and and written extremely credible papers that can be used at a later date. I haven't received confirmation but Unisa will be starting a portfolio process in 2002 or 2003. Since they have a close working relationship with TESC I am wondering if they will be following the same format and have the same guidelines turned up a notch. Have a good Tuesday. Hille

To the best of my knowledge, there are no schools that offer an entire degree through experiential learning (work / life experience), however, some notes turned up the following:

    Central Michigan U. (10 of 36 credits)
    Central Queensland U. (50% of 20 courses)
    Deakin U. (25% of 16 units)
    Heriot-Watt U. (2 of 9 courses)
    Loma Linda U. (9 of 48 credits)
    Metropolitan State U. (9 of ??)
    Oxford Brookes U. (4 or 9 modules)
Portland State U. (26 of 72 qtr. hrs.)
    Salve regina (25%)
    Sonoma State U. (varies)
    Syracuse U. (MBA)(19 of 54 credits)
    Trinity U. (10 of 45)
    U. of Colorado, Boulder (9 of 30)

Some of these do require short residencies, some have no residency requirements. Also, this is not an all inclusive list, these are only the one's that I found and things change.

    original research

One of the reasons it is rare for graduate credit through portfolio is the idea that at the masters and doctoral level one is pursuing new original research.
There are some rare exceptions. Al. Einstein submitted a paper he had written on his own to a university, and it was accepted for his doctorate. That tradition has all but faded. Though I think there are still one or two European universities which list publication as one method to get a doctorate.

Only one that I know of. Western Governors University has a rather experimental MA in learning and technology, by examination and portfolio. It's aimed at professional educators already working in the ed-tech area.

I think that Lawrie was enrolled in this for a while and was underwhelmed. Apparently it wasn't really ready for prime time when it rolled out. But it is probably getting the kinks worked out since then.
