Hello! Can anyone from the US or Canada who's completed a PhD via research only via University of Pretoria, South Africa, comment on the process? Is the university receptive to foreign graduate students? Is it reasonably priced? How long did the process take? Any other information would be greatly appreciated as well. Thanks in advance!
Can't comment on Pretoria but I completed a doctorate (DBL) at Unisa by distance from Canada, and can discuss the general experience (which was good). Feel free to be in touch. All the best!
I completed the PhD in Practical Theology through the University of Pretoria in 2009 and was enrolled in the program from 2004-2009. I had a wonderful experience. Both my department and the Faculty of Theology were very helpful to me as a student based in North America. During the time that I was enrolled, the costs associated with pursuing the PhD were extremely reasonable. I hope that helps. I would be happy to offer additional reflections if you'd like.
Thanks to everyone who has replied so far. (I am new to posting here, but read the forums regularly.) To CLSeibel, have the tuition fees dramatically increased since you attended?
It appears that tuition has gone up some in the four years since I completed my program, which is to be expected. However, it doesn't appear as though tuition rates have increased exorbitantly. They are still quite reasonable.
wendyyvonne, If I'm not too late, I would like to echo CLSeibel's experience, which was a positive influence on my decision to pursue a PhD at Pretoria. The costs are very reasonable AND the bursury (scholarship) program was great for me. In fact, I may have spent about $100 out of pocket after scholarship. I defend my dissertation in four days.
I contacted Pretoria a few years ago about PhD by dissertation from the US. They seem open to it but it appeared to me that its not a preferred method like with UNISA or other intentionally Distance Ed programs. I opted for other options but the school looks fantastic.
About 1/3 of my Masters hours were directed research courses in Biblical archaeology in Israel. However, I did not write a thesis for that degree. At Pretoria I enrolled in Theology: Missiology, Science of Religion.
I'd like to know more about what doctoral programs University of Pretoria offers for distance learning. When I contacted the psychology department, they stated they do not do DL, and referred me to UNISA.
I don't think they exactly consider it distance learning. It's more like some of their faculty members are willing to supervise doctoral research by students who aren't nearby. It's usually better to approach a faculty member whose research interests you share, and if they're willing to supervise you, let them help you navigate the admissions procedure from the inside.
