I've looked into Georgetown's program. It seems like a doctorate for people who are intellectually curious but don't have academic aspirations, especially when their interests span multiple disciplines.

I think there is a very old thread on this started by marilynd.

True. And I'd guess that something like this might have utility as an upgrade degree for community college instructors teaching humanities subjects.

Edit: Tekman's post appeared right after mine, and from what he wrote, it looks like this thing is a lot more ambitious than I'd thought.

    TEKMAN Semper Fi!

The program designs for high profile people, the acceptance rate is 9%. If you look at the program candidate yearly, only about 4 to 10 students. Most of them are experienced people, such as:

    - Lieutenant General in the Marine Corps
    - Chief Information Officer of Georgetown Law School
    - Retired Executive from U.S Postal Service
    - Distinguish Professor with Ph.D degree

    They are different specializations:

    American Studies
    Catholic Studies
    Classical Civilizations
    Ethics and the Professions
    Humanities
    Individualized Study
    International Affairs
    Islam and Muslim Christian Relations
    Literature and Society
Medieval and Early Modern European Studies
    Religious Studies
    Social and Public Policy
The Theory and Practice of American Democracy
    Visual Culture

I guess if you work for the State Department, you can said that you have a Doctor of Liberal Studies in International Affairs.

One of my professor at Georgetown University, Dr. Pablo Molina, earned his Doctor of Liberal Studies at Georgetown University with concentration in ethic in technology. While I worked on my Master at Georgetown, he told me that his dissertation was rejected 5 times.
