My wife who is 30, has spent the past 12 (or so) years working as a teacher at a childcare center for kids aged infant to 13 which is about to shut down. Other than a year or two hiatus working at a photography studio and a gym as an office manager, she's done that her whole working life. She's a bit apprehensive and not at all confident in going back to school, but these types of childcare jobs are capped at about $10-11/hr in our area. The only benefit is that there are job openings everywhere and the hours are good.

I am trying to convince her to build on her skills and am wondering if there are any reasonably priced online certificate or short-term programs she could take that would either build on her existing skills and/or could be parlayed into eventually pursuing an Associates and/or are actually useful and could be used to get a job right out of the gate. Eventual career earnings aren't as important as good hours and low stress.

Has anyone been in a similar boat and have any ideas?

    Much appreciated in advance.

Good Morning, I am wondering if a certificate in Recreational therapy would interest her. I know two people that have received certification and are doing well with this. Hille...I have an old thread with a link.

Is this enough to at least get your foot in the door someplace?

Spend a little time googling key word(s) early childhood education or child development with distance learning and certificate as add ons. This will get you started:

Online Learning Programs: University of Alaska Distance Learning Courses

Your wife should be certain to check the surrounding elementary and middle schools. They employ para=professionals to work with Special Ed kids and typically these jobs only require H.S. diplomas to start. They love people with real experience working with kids as lots of patience is required and sometimes people who just have the degree but not the experience wash out when reality sets in. Good luck.

Hi, I could not immediately find the link but google DH Special Services which will put you in touch with the program director. This is a NJ based state certified program but I believe there is reciprocity. There is also a job board. Hope this helps. I have two friends that obtained this cert. Hille

I know this is kind of an old thread, but I just wanted to say that these are great ideas! I too am looking for some kind of affordable, short-term training that will help expand my career options. I've just spent the last hour or two researching these ideas and checking out the links :)
