i don't know if any of you read slashdot but it's an interesting site geared toward computer-related folks, scientists, and general nerdiness (my category). here's a bit of discussion on a topic familiar to us at degreeinfo: Ask Slashdot: Is the Bar Being Lowered At Universities? - Slashdot
I just saw the post via the link. I think that he may be expecting other students to write like one would write for a graded paper? I am not sure if that is what he was thinking but I sounds like it. Personally, some of the classes I have been in have were similar with respects to student postings. For me, unless it was unreadable I never really thought that the standards were shot because of it. However (there is always a however), I have taken plenty of courses where the instructor clearly makes the grammar and writing requirements known. "I expect all students to be clear and to the point in their open posts, and to use proper grammar. The overall grade will reflect the quality of the posts". When I saw this there was no question that big brother was watching the grammar and content of the posts - hence I paid extra attention to what and how I posted. Folks tend to do better work when they are required to do so, if not "casual writing techniques" ALWAYS seem to take over, lol.
