Hey everyone great forum and thanks to you all I may have found the answer I was looking for.

I'm looking at the BYU independent study course for French and was wondering if anyone can share their experience? In particular with their language courses.

This will suffice for my universities language requirement to finish off my graduation. Was also wondering if anyone had experience with transferring credits? Thanks!

    Hello,
    I don't know about BYU .
But the french clep & OPI are probably the easiest option if you already know some french.
With a CLEP grade of 50 or better you can earn 6 credits in French I and up to 12 with a higher score.
Opi: Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) - Language Testing International
You can earn 2 Lower credits as a novice, 4 L credits for intermediate, 8L for intermediate high, 10 L for adavanced mid and 10 L & 2 Upper for Advanced high.
    Hope this helps

    ACTFL Article
ACTFL's Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) has been favorably reviewed by the American Council on Education (ACE) College Credit Recommendation Service.
You will have to send the result to ACE have them sent you a transcript with the number of recommended credits(for a fee) and forward it to your college. As far as credit transfer acceptance that will depend on your college.
What college/university are you currently attending?

I have known a couple dozen people who have taken courses from BYU Independent Study and all of them had good things to say. They liked the format, the "speedback" system for quick feedback and the student services. I do not know anyone who has taken a French class from them, but they have a top-flight foreign language program (full disclosure: I have a degree in Spanish Language from BYU).

BYU being the flagship college of the Mormon Church (who run a huge missionary operation) takes its language study seriously. I would expect excellent language instruction, and I understand they deliver it by all accounts.

    Really well priced to.

I notice that you are at Western Governors University. Bit of trivia: WGU's president is also a BYU grad.

I was just thinking, maybe I can go to France and take the CLEP in the English language. I would love to get 12 credits for that.

    Thanks for the input everyone.

Think in going to go with univ of Wisconsin instead. It's 3 times the price however I feel as though I will have a better chance of passing this one.

Any experience with their distance education program?

It depends which branch of UW you are looking at - Stout and Superior have very good distance ed, but they are not strong in world language programs. Eau Claire, Madison & Milwaukee are not known for their distance ed.

I just moved to UT from WI. I did my graduate studies at UW-Madison and had a fabulous experience. I was involved in online/distance ed in WI for 10 years. Just started working for BYU world language course development here in UT, and I'm finding they have some pretty innovative course models and solid course content.

Ya at this point I'm looking for the easiest and cheapest solution. I know univ of Wisconsin class transfers no problem, it's just very expensive.
