Help me choose. I can't decide between them, and I need to choose one in the next few days so my schedule will be set for the Spring semester.

REL 366 - Islam in the Modern World

Course description: Examines the worldwide transformations of Islamic religion, cultures, and societies in the modern period.

REL 390 - Women and Religion

Course description: Role of women in religious traditions and/or religious sects, including a study of myth and symbols as they are used to establish, maintain, and enforce sex roles within specific religions.

It really depends on what you're interested in. If I had to choose one, I'd take the class on Islam. The course sounds very practical and helpful for understanding the world today, which is what I prefer. I would be more interested in the course on women and religion if it focused on religions today rather than going all the way back to myths. Problems I learn about today, like human trafficking or that girl getting attacked because she wanted to go to school, I can work to try to end or at least to help the victims, but over-focusing on mistreatment from the past just makes me feel sad, angry, and helpless, which isn't helpful to me. You could have a completely different perspective though and should take the course that interests you.

The first one sounds less likely to be comprised entirely of political correctness, so I'll vote for that one.

Thanks for both responses. I'm glad I posted this here. I was over thinking it since both classes are interesting to me. I think I like the first one a little more, too, once I saw it from that perspective. Thanks!!

Are discussion boards a major part of the courses?

Another way to look at it, if so: Imagine two discussion boards just out there on the Internet. One is discussing Islam in the Modern World, the other, Women and Religion. They happen to be populated by ASU undergraduate students, and you'll be graded on your participation. Choose one to join for a term.

Does "Islam in the Modern World" have an associated lab course "Improvised Explosive Devices"?

    Yeah, I went there.

What, it's their fault for not being able to afford drones?
