Hello everyone. I am a recent Graduate from a brick and mortar school with a Master of Library and Information Science degree. Unfortunately I graduated into a saturated job market. Many of the job positions are now expecting candidates to have not only the MLIS, but also a second Masters in anything. I am a Canadian and considering Athabasca University's Master of Arts in Integrated Studies. Looking at the so called "thesis" this "program" has produced make me want to gag (I think the shortest was 14 pages!), but Athabasca is currently the most respected online school in Canada. They do, however, charge about $1000 per course. But, they allow a number of courses to be transfer from other institutions. Can anyone direct my to accredited schools that allow people to take random graduate courses (ie without being enrolled in a full program) which are as inexpensive as possible? I already accumulated significant debt and, although I am resigned that I will have to get another degree just to get the career the first Masters was supposed to provide, I would like it to be as cheap as possible. My BA was in political science, but I am also interested in History and Sociology, as well as anything to do with Information Policy. Thanks!
If you're determined to enter a crowded job market, and you're sure that a second Master's degree is the key, might you be better off going for something well regarded?
I was also going to suggest WNMU Virtual Campus - Online Programs Even if they do not offer individual courses you could always sign up for a degree program then "drop out" once you have the courses you want.
