Hello, this is my first post here. I found this board while trying to find out more about Canyon College. I've read a lot of negative things about the school's so-called accreditation and degrees. My question is, are any of its individual courses worthwhile? Their Technology: Issues in Criminolgy and Criminal Justice course sounds very interesting. My goal is not to get a degree (I already have one) but to increase my knowledge of the field in which I'm working. (Our company makes software for law enforcement.) What can I do to find out more about this course?

    Thanks very much in advance.

  2. Several universities and colleges that have recognized accreditation offer criminal justice courses and degree programs through distance learning. I'd investigate these rather than look at Canyon.

Here are some to look at:

    Undergraduate

    Andrew Jackson University
    Caldwell College
    Cloud County Community College
    Florida Gulf Coast University
    Kaplan College
    National University
    University of Southern Colorado
    Washington State University

    Graduate

    Capella University
    Florida State University
    Indiana State University
    Michigan State University
    Nova Southeastern University
    Sam Houston State University
    Troy State University
    University of Wisconsin-Platteville

I could be wrong, but I don’t think that Canyon College is regionally accredited (RA). Here is a list of the regional accreditors: Click Here.

If a school is not RA, then I strongly urge you to stay away from it.

Canyon College is not any sort of accredited. I can't say if one would get anything out of taking a single course through them, but the last time I reviewed their faculty list, it was woefully inadequate to be offering graduate degrees in CJ/Criminology. Several of the faculty have their terminal degrees from unaccredited schools, and I didn't see a single faculty member with the credentials to be teaching graduate-level Criminology.

So...to answer the original question, are any of its individual courses worthwhile? There's no way for me to say for sure, it depends an awful lot on the person's prior education/experience. However, given Canyon's unaccredited status and (IMO) inadequate faculty, I wouldn't advise anyone to take the risk.

Thanks for the advice. I'll stay clear away from Canyon, and look up the other leads you've provided.
