The site for the MA program says that it's "offered at no cost to eligible local, tribal, state, and federal officials."

I just find it ironic that the U.S. government provides training in homeland security to Native American tribes....

    Indians and Homeland Security

Native American tribes can have self-governing entities, with courts, police, codes, etc, so training is offered to their officials just as to other units of government.

I am sure Steve is aware that Natives American tribes are Sovereign entities - you apparently missed the irony that he was referring to.

Perhaps training is offered because some tribal areas spread across at least one international border (the Canada-USA border but I understand there maybe a few Mexico-USA tribal areas).

Tribal members are usually US citizens.

    There is no irony.

    Ironic
the use of words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of its literal meaning: the irony of her reply, “How nice!” when I said I had to work all weekend.

I do, too. I think what Steve is getting at here (and he can correct me if I'm wrong) is:

The US Government is providing homeland security training to Native American tribes - so they can secure their homeland, after their ancestors had so much of their homeland taken away from them - under the auspices of the U.S. Government.

If that isn't ironic, then just what is the word we need?

I’m curious…is there a perception that all NPS course exams are “pathetically easy”?

Exactly. Kind of ruins the joke to have to explain it, though, doesn't it?

Sorry Mr. Dictionary, but if you are going to provide a definition of a word you might want to look at more than just the first one provided.

#5 on your citation: "an outcome of events contrary to what was, or might have been, expected" - as in it is ironic that the federal government allows a sovereign people into courses on homeland security when it was the said sovereign people's homeland to begin with before the aforementioned federal government took it from them.

    Irony.

The exams mentioned are the ones for the NPS free online courses - they are much like the FEMA offerings.

The NPS Masters in Homeland Security is a different animal entirely. I have several colleagues who have graduated the program and they all had a tremendous workload.

In California, you see T-shirts that depict Indian warriors with a slogan that reads something like this:

    Indeed, for example:

Biggest problem they had wasn't the white man, but their own enmity for each other. They never could unite enough to mount a good defense. They came close a couple of times but blew it. Reminds me of the ancient Jews who successfully revolted against the Romans for a time only to lose it all not just because of the might of the legions against them but also their own petty squabbles left them hopelessly divided and therefore weak.

The NPS master's isn't "free." It's very expensive. But the participants don't pay; they're selected into slots given to various state, local, federal, and tribal agencies. Those agencies pay for the students' costs. I had first-hand experience with this, managing DHS's role in this and the parallel executive development program offered by NPS.

Yes, it does, Steve -- but on the Internet, you sort of get used to it... you have to. :smirk:
