The US Department of Education recently published it’s findings on the “The Power of the Internet for Learning: Final Report of Web-Based Education Commission”. The report deals with the broad spectrum of Internet instruction from K-Graduate education. The Commission’s findings are interesting and lend to the belief that distance learning is here to stay.

    Some snips from the report:

”The need for a new design in learning is there. Today’s education is built on an agrarian model that worked in the years when we were a nation of farmers, foresters, and fisherman…”

Changing demographics: “77 million adults are estimated to be taking post-secondary courses, only 16% of college students fit the traditional 18-22 year old profile, attend full-time and live on campus.”

Growth in corporate universities: “In the last thirteen years the number of companies that have opened corporate universities grew from 400 to 1800. Forty percent of the Fortune 500 companies have established corporate universities. At the current rate, the number of corporate universities will exceed the number of traditional universities by year 2010.”

"The post-secondary online market is estimated at $1.2 billion and it is expected to grow to $7 billion by 2003.”

"Post-secondary enrollment is projected to triple to 15% this year from 5% in 1998.”

"The demand for US higher education by students abroad is huge. Currently, 500,000 students are enrolled – global demand forecasts 160 million students by 2025”
