I'm looking to complete a BA in Criminal Justice. I have my Associates and just need to do the major. I need a DL solution as there are no programs locally that I could take advantage of.

I've looked into Andrew Jackson University, but was wondering if anyone had any more suggestions.

    Thanks

On a thread sometime back I think Faulkner University, Montgomery, AL was offering such a degree.

There may be some US options. I would get a latte and check out Barron's Guide at Barnes & Nobles".

I notice that the University of South Africa has DL Crim J degrees through Ph.D level. UNISA is very affordable of high quality and possibly with more acceptance than DETC (which they also have). South African education is in a state of transition though.

As a side note, man is academia seeming to pump out criminal justice degrees. Used to be you asked someone's major and odds are it was business, now half seem to be Crim J.

I don't know if this will help, but you might want to check into the BPA (Bachelor of Professional Arts) at Athabasca University. The website for the Bachelor of Professional Arts--Criminal Justice Major is located at: http://www.athabascau.ca/html/programs/b_pa/bpa_3.htm#note2
According to the website for this degree, entry to this degree program "...is available to students who have graduated with a two-year approved diploma in criminal justice-related areas from an accredited college or technical institute. The program provides students with two years of Arts and Administrative Studies courses along with specialized senior-level courses in criminal justice."
I am sure that this is one of many options that the good people who are regular visitors will be offering you in the coming days.
    Good luck in your studies!

    Eilerc:

Four regionally accredited colleges come to mind:

Caldwell College offers a BA in Criminal Justice. Requires 122 credits to complete. Cost:$357/credit. No residency. The last 30 credits must be earned at the school.

Mountain State University offers a BS in Criminal Justice. Requires 129 credits for degree completion. Restrictions: 25 years old (minimum), 40 transferable credits, 2 years work experience. Cost: $175/credit. Thirty-three credits must be earned through the school.

New York Institute of Technology offers a BS in Criminal Justice. No residency. Cost: $470/credit. 120 credits to complete degree, with the last thirty earned through the school.

University of Wyoming offers a BS in Criminal Justice. 120-124 credits required, with last thirty through the school. Cost: a bargain @$136/credit. No residency.

All offer financial aid, should you need it.

  7. Surprisingly, nobody's brought up my "big three" alma mater: Thomas Edison State College.

    (links to the "curriculum sheet")

The degree is actually the Bachelor of Science in Human Services, with a concentration in Administration of Justice. Well-rounded (IMHO) distribution requirements, but completely attainable for somebody with current experience in the field. (And you'll need that current experience.. the BSHS has a Practicum requirement and is restricted to students with current employment in their major area of study.)

    BA Criminal Justice Degree

If your still looking for a B.A. in Criminal Justice, I would suggest looking into the program at Columbia Southern University.
The program is well put together.
Another program that I would suggest is the forensic Science degree at American Institute of Applied science. These two progams together would give you an excellent foundation in understanding criminal justice. good Luck !

    Re: BA Criminal Justice Degree

However, Columbia Southern has DETC accreditation, which has far less utility than regional accreditation. Discounting that, CSU has a rather sleazy history that prevents me from recommending them.

There are much better options available in the Criminal Justice field.

I've never had a degree in Criminal Justice, so my CJ graduate program is new, interesting and rewarding to me. :)
Do you really think so? Or is your perception based on the fact that you work as a practicioner in criminal justice?

I just noticed that UMass Lowell has started an online BS in CJ program.

The UMass-Online webpage lists a M.A. in CJ from UMass-Lowell, but no undergrad degree.

Incidentally, I received my M.A. in CJ from UMass-Lowell (pre-online days), and it's an excellent program (rated one of the top Master's programs in the country by the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences). The online courses I've seen listed are taught by regular UMass faculty, who are outstanding.

    Bruce,

Thanks for the heads up; I missed that and somehow logged it in as an undergrad degree. I'm pleased to see that UML is going forward with online gradate programs. Sometimes I think about going on past the BS IT and I'd be happy to stay at UML to do so.

I too am pleased that UML is offering DL graduate programs, I think a state university offering totally non-resident degrees adds credibility to DL in general.

I'm a bit sad, however, that the online program seems to have sounded the death knell for the off-campus program in Boston that I attended to earn my UML degree. :(

I just found a DL MA in Justice Administration here. It is reportedly a cross between Criminal Justice and Public Administration.

    DL CJ Degree

I started my on-line BS in Criminal Justice Administration program at Bellevue University in August 2002. Interestingly, it was through this discussion board that someone suggested that I look there. At the time, I had a non-RA AACJ degree from SCUPS and was seeking out an RA school to complete my Bachelor's.

I was enrolled in an accelerated program and was awarded 24 credits for law enforcement training. All I needed to do was complete the 36 credit major plus the 9-credit Signature Series and I would have my degree.

5 months into the program, I can tell you that it is a great experience for me and it is an excellent program. Cost is about 265/credit or about 9700 for the 36 hour major. The instructor that you are assigned is your instructor for the whole program and the program is one year long.

This month I began writing my thesis; what the University refers to as the Capstone Project. There are 11 students in my class; started with 14 but three withdrew. There is a lot of work as one might expect. The on-line program is exactly the same as that which a student would go through at the University itself. I honestly cannot tell you one negative thing about the school or its program.

I will be completing my BS / CJA in November and I have this forum to thank for the educational direction I have taken. I hope that this info is of use to you.

    In addition...

to all these options, there is a Masters in CJ offered entirely online, I beleive, by John Bear's alma mater, Michigan State University.

So much to choose from--so little time!
