    John Hancock University

What is wrong with these people? Cardean U, Ellis College of NYIT, Ellis U, John Hancock U, what's next Fantasy Land University College?

I reckon they are trying to hide :ninja: themselves from the wolves, and big a skeleton in the closet - losing their Regional Accreditation.

These folks are crazy - the site looks good though, better than EU.

Nice exploitation....lol! John Hancock University (JHU) does not specify its institutional history. Well the name will be standing out from the crowd, also known as Johns Hopkins University (JHU)

Tsk, tsk...careless! From the JHU site, today:

"The Bachelor of Arts in Child Development program at Ellis University seeks to ensure the quality of care..."

Can't even change their boilerplate... must have been in a hurry. Maybe the Web-meister was on double-overtime. Real quality!

John Hancock U.'s tuition, while an initially confusing set of three different payment plans and rates, seems much more reasonable in ultimate total cost than what I remember from Ellis. 6000 to 7500 under the lowest-total plan for an NA master's? That's not uncompetitive. The content of their M.A. in Communication Arts isn't offered by distance by a thousand schools, and has obvious application to career or freelance work.

    I'm not unimpressed.

Maybe we could start a little spin-off consulting business, helping schools who want to change their name. Personally, when I think of John Hancock I think of insurance.

Should John Hancock University adopt Gamecock as its mascot? lol

Doesn't the University of South Carolina have the trademark on the Gamecock mascot?

I doubt it. Jacksonville State University mascot is the Gamecocks

Isn't John Hancock University the name used the John Hancock Insurance Company for their in-house agent training program?

Is this name as bad or worse than "New Charter University"? *shudders*

    I'm not sure yet.

I think much the concern with New Charter University was how it would read, or "ring," to people outside of circles like ours who follow higher education closely. I think John Hancock University has a lower risk of reading poorly this way than the less-traditional New Charter University. IIRC, Rich Douglas' research suggests more traditional college-name types are favored.

That said, I don't think Ellis University was bad on that count either. And I can see how going from "name associated with 19th and 20th century gateway to America" to "personal name of American Revolutionary, best known now for his enormous signature" could seem a bit pretentious. But if the reader has no idea of the backstory, no loss?

    What about the owners?

The Wiki says JHU is "owned" by Capital Education LLC. I read Capital's web-page and their usual model is "partnership" - they call themselves full-service providers of DL programs. It looks like they do everything from course design to setting-up and maintaining the on-line delivery system, presumably for a slice of the "take."

One of their "partnerships" is with Cumberland University, Lebanon TN.

Anybody have any thoughts on, or experience with Capital Education? BTW the Wiki has a couple more grammar errors than I like to see on a University site... that's maybe not the best PR for JHU.

Capital Education is here: Capital Education

Looks like not everything has changed with the switch from Ellis to JHU. I note Virginia Carlin, Ed. D. still holds the office of President.

We can think this through, in a logical manner.

If you don't like "New Charter University", then presumably you prefer the old name of "Andrew Jackson University".
So "Andrew Jackson University" > "New Charter University".

But how does "Andrew Jackson University" compare to "John Hancock University" ?

Well, both names are well known. But John Hancock actually went to college (he graduated from Harvard). Andrew Jackson, in contrast, had no formal higher education (he did become a lawyer and was admitted to the bar, but it was through apprenticeship and self-study). So for college naming purposes, "John Hancock" seems like a more appropriate choice.

The "John Hancock" name does have an association with insurance. But this also implies security and wealth, which are generally positive connotations. The "Andrew Jackson" name, in contrast, has an association with anime TV series, including "Bakugan: Gundalian Invaders" and "Beyblade Metal Fusion". This would admittedly be much cooler in some contexts, but for college naming purposes, "John Hancock" again seems like the safer choice.

    So we can conclude that:

"John Hancock University" > "Andrew Jackson University" > "New Charter University"

See how easy it is ?

I agree with CalDog -- without considering the history of the school, the name "John Hancock University" is actually a good one, especially with some of the dopey names we've seen schools adopt.

The best name should be New Harvard University...lol

I hear what you guys are saying and it makes perfect sense, but, you know, the sounding of the name... you know people are going to rag on it since it sounds very much like an act one might engage in...

My university has partnered with Cap Ed for our online MBA and RN to BSN programs. We are in the first year of the partnership.
