Can a DL degree really help to get a job?

Higher education has entered a new paradigm. With many students attempting to balance work, family and school, distant learning has opened doors to asynchronously get an education and ultimately, a college degree.

One of the things I find curious is that with the significant drop in college enrollments, why has tuition continued to increase? My guess is that the college administrators look at the financial numbers and say, we didn't bring in as much money this year so we need to raise tuition instead of saying let's bring in more students by lowering the tuition. Kinda of like the Romney vs Obama tax debate of more jobs or raise taxes.

It's getting more and more difficult to find a "good deal" in tuition costs anymore. I applaud schools like Nations University and tutorials like coursera.org and Khan Academy that offer free unaccredited online coursework. I still believe in Excelsior's College statement of "What you know is more important than where or how you learned it," link:Copyrights - excelsior.edu

However, many employers are more concerned about having an "accredited credential".

Mine did. I was hired specifically because the concentration of my online master's degree was exactly what the school was looking for.

According to the article, the perception is improving: "More than half of human-resources managers SHRM surveyed for an August 2010 report said that if two applicants with the same level of experience were applying for a job, it would not make a difference whether the job candidate’s degree was obtained through an online program or a bricks-and-mortar university. Seventy-nine percent said they had hired an applicant with an online degree during the previous 12 months."

The question is, "Does a degree get you a job?" More and more, employers look at the college degree as a check mark on the application. Many organizations are wising up when screening applicants and do further screening and testing of applicants to see if they really have, "The right stuff!"

I believe that the degree is an important piece of the pie but not as much as degree holders, colleges and universities may believe. Of course schools want applicants to believe that having a degree from their school is everything .

That was one of the reasons! Don't sell yourself short, you were hired for a variety of reasons!

    Philosophy time.

A college degree is something you hold. It can never define who you are!

    I agree!

I know people that are credential freaks. They act like you need a credential from an accredited college to do anything. If a person can get the job done, give them a shot. In the pass I’ve ran a few website and hired some freelance designers to do some work for me. The only thing I wanted to see was a portfolio of their work. It didn’t matter to me how they learned or where they learned.

Thanks, I'll have to frame this post. It is rare that someone agrees with me on Degreeinfo.com!

    Not so fast

I don't think most people on DI know who a lawrenceq is. You better wait for a big dog to give your post a stamp before you pick out a frame. My co-sign is a like having a degree from MUST University. :nervous:

Larry is the reason we started our series of DI WANTED Posters. Typically it's a "shoot on sight" sorta deal.:AR15firing::kiss::AR15firing:

    Let's hope that your employer/father-in-law doesn't read degreeinfo.com. ;)
