This post isn't for me (no really it isn't) I'm going to UMASS for Computer Science thanks yall!! :)

This post is for my friend Robert he wants to teach at a college level currently he has a certificate in computer science and is working as a receptionist at a tax office but he wants to be a professor but is unsure how to go about it. He likes that I take online courses, at first he was a skeptic but I showed him how rigorous my homework is and now he's a believer ;) what would be the best course of action for him. He said he would really like to do online teaching in the future and he has about 50 credits.

    Thank you in advance.

Typically you need a masters degree to teach plus industry experience.

I'll pass along the info he thought a Bachelors would due but apparently not, do you know of any good colleges? I enjoy UMASS but i'm not sure if they have a broad degree for teaching.

You typically need a master and 18 graduate credits in the subject you will teach. If you teach accounting, you need at least 18 grad credits in accounting. There are cases when a BS would be enough but that is not typical.

And if you want to teach in a California Community College you generally need a full masters in the subject you want to teach.

I think the first part of becoming an online teacher might be getting a computer. Respectfully, why isn't he here finding out more about DL? What made him a "believer" about your coursework? Maybe he should take an online class or teach at the community college to get a feel for it.
To answer your question though, college level teaching is very competitive. Typically, as stated, a masters can qualify you to teach at a community college. Within a community college, there are online options, but there are already qualified teachers working at the CC fighting for those jobs. To teach in a 4 year program he needs a doctorate.
My suggestion is to become masters credentialed in the field you want to teach (not in teaching) and then land a face to face teaching job. The degree plus experience will put him in the running for the online positions.
    GL to your friend.

He works long hours and since i've been here before i offered to ask to help him out. He's taken courses online from his local college before but never attended a college fully online.

I mostly agree with Jennifer. Lots of us work long hours but it only takes a minute to register at ddegreeinfo and then you have free access to years of threads, a huge amount of degreeinfo.

What does your friend want to teach? He has some sort of cert in cs but is that his choice of careers? The best thing is to start small. Aim at an associates degree. Once that's in the bank, roll it into a bachelors degree. Don't stop there because all our other members are correct when they say that a Masters degree is the MINIMUM credential for college teaching. He also might want to pick up a couple dozen certs along the way.

Getting a college teaching job is very, very difficult these days. It's going to take him years to earn even minimum credentials. 15-20 hours per week of study on top of his job over a period of 4-6 years. Is he prepared for that?

I'd say tell your friend to get a masters degree on Computer Science and gain some experience through teaching in universities. Most of employers hire professionals who has already gained experience and and plus factor if he/she has a masters degree.

I agree, can't go wrong with a master's degree. Also he might be able to get on a fellowship type program for outside experience.
