I am getting desparate...I cannot get a bead on the IUHS medical school and the cons are outweighing the pros...do you have anything that I can reference regarding this school. I would hate to have to meander through this slough only to find that I am a dead fish at the end of the day. Thanks for whatever you can offer. imperoo

    Imperoo:
I am not Dr. Bear but I have a piece of advice for you. In one of your previous posts, you seem to be concerned with respect and reputation of a school. In view of that, I will advise you to stay away from IUHS because Nova Southeastern University enjoys a better reputation than IUHS. Also IUHS may be barely legitimate. If quality and reputation are your utmost concern, I don't think that IUHS will be the right choice for you.

I'm also not Dr. Bear, but....

What degree are you hoping to obtain from IUHS? If its the MD degree and you want to do it through partial DL, don't most state medical licensing boards state that the medical education must be done "in-residence" or words to that effect?

I'm not John Bear either, but . . . no, wait, yes I am.

    My best advice:

    1. Pick up telephone and call the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates in Philadelphia (215-386-5900).

    2. Ask them if IUHS graduates qualify to take the USMLE examinations.

    3. If the answer is yes, give them serious consideration. If the answer is no, do not give them serious consideration.

    4. If the answer is yes, then you might ask IUHS what their pass rate is. Annoyingly, the ECFMG doesn't give those data out any more, but schools can if they want to. In the past, when ECFMG did report school scores, the range was truly from 100% (Tel-Aviv) to 0% (some of the Caribbean, Mexican, and Philippine schools).

    5. Report back here and tell us what you learned.

    FINDINGS...

...Dr. Bear...thank you for your insighful entry...I called the organization in Philly and yes they recognize (!!!) IUHS for the USMLE. In fact they have students from IUHS registered...this is a good thing, eh ? Now the next query is to deal with the Federation of State Medical Boards (817 571 2949) to ascertain whether various states (e.g., New Jersey) recognize this entire schemata...I am NOT sure (exactly) what all of this means BUT I am giving IUHS consideration...again. Any more advice here ? Thanks again. imperoo

Imperoo: "...I am NOT sure (exactly) what all of this means BUT I am giving IUHS consideration... again."

In medicine, like law, because of the examination system, in one sense, the school itself is far less important than the fact of their qualifying people to take exams. For instance, the vast majority of people, I believe, neither know nor care where their primary care physician earned his/her degree, as long as they are properly licensed.

But in another sense, it is clear that some schools do a much better job than others of preparing people for the exams. Surely no one would choose a Filipino school with a 0% success rate. Has IUHS actually had any students take the USMLE? If not, when will the first one(s) do so?

    IUHS REDUX again

Dera Dr. Bear - Yes according to the phone mavens there have been IUHS grads taking the exam...however it is difficult to pin these folks down to definitive answers since they hardly want to speak with you at all in the first place...I am checking the Federation but agree with you that the quality of examinee is vital to the process...however I'd hate to be caught in a political flap if IUHS truned out to be the mill on the floss so I want to at least give myself the benefit of the doubt and go to a place where the opinion is not threatening nor counterproductive. I will keep you posted as to the evolution of this tale...I do hope that it comes not a cropper but DL is a crapshoot at best...even at times the good schools can achieve nihilistic retorts...thank you again for your interest...imperoo
