I have been in the Electronics technician program at Penn Foster college for over a year now. I have 5 more exams before I graduate with my career diploma. I have zero complaints about the school, other than some of the electronic equipment they send you is different than the book, just because technology changes. Anyway the reason I took this program is because I love electronics, and because I was told, and researched that a career diploma in Electronics is enough to get a real good paying job in the Electronics field. I researched that with an ET career diploma you should start at around $46,000 and in 5 or so years of experience you should move into the $60 thousand dollar range. My question is, is my research correct because some people online are making me paranoid that it is not? I continue to research it, and it seems right to me. Thanks for any help.

I have not worked in "pure electronic" for many years but those starting salaries seem a bit high. What types of jobs can you get in electronics? I used to work troubleshooting intercoms for subs working for the manufacturer.

All aspects of electronics, troubleshooting being one.

    Location matters a lot.

I would think that salry would not be unreasonable on second thought. ET positions at Honeywell (local company) pay in that range.

Depends on the industry and location. I know guys making 50k plus doing industrial electronics. I also know guys doing well working for AT&T. I also hear there's money to be made working on medical equipment. My advice is to get some experience and you'll be fine.

Thanks, my goal is to get a decent job in the 40 to 45 thousand range and go for my AAS in Electrical/mechanical systems and maintenance while working. I know there is a lot of work in that, and plenty of money.

I have worked in medical equipment (biomedical repair) for about 20 years and worked in a hospital (specialize in anesthesia machines and ventilators) , for GE Medical, and for another OEM. The starting salary for a biomed is about $35K. You would need electronics and an understand (basic) of A&P. If you add in an understanding of networking it is even better. You can get a field service job for an OEM starting at $50K or so.

If there is anything you need to know about this industry, PM me. I am a director of field service for a medical device company with over 125 direct and indirect reports and have managed over $400M in service contracts so I know the industry.
