    Hello,

I was wondering if DETC (specifically Western Governors College) transfers to traditional universities? I would like to be as economical and convenient with my undergrad as possible with my target set on traditional Masters degree.

I live in Nashville and would like to eventually get a Masters from MTSU (Middle Tennessee State University) or even do an extension Masters through Harvard for their Software Development program (lofty goal, but shoot for the moon, right?).

I can't find a single online degree program that hasn't been blasted with criticism. I am beginning to think that a highly regarded online degree is too good to be true. I've checked out a few purely online A.A. degrees that have predetermined transfer to MTSU and wasn't impressed. You can get an A.A. in software development, but it transfers to a Professional Studies Bachelors Degree? It's ridiculous.

Seems that unless I am really interested in an obscure, generic degree, I am going to have to go 'brick and mortar.' I don't have a problem with traditional education, but I am married with three kids and running a business.

At any rate, I've been reading a few posts on this site and was really impressed with the general knowledge of the users. If I've asked a really tired question, I am sorry.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated :)

A degree from Western Governors University will be accepted at any RA college/university. However, I have not hear about Western Governor's College. If you're talking about WGU, you're in the clear.

Yeah, I meant WGU not 'College.' Everything I've read leads me to believe that you can get into any Masters program regardless of Bachelors focus. However, I wasn't sure about the accreditation... I guess I could call the focus University?

    Thanks

WGU is both RA and NA accredited. You won't have a problem having another RA college accept a degree from WGU. My co-worker recently graduated with their MBA at WGU and loved it! He said it was the cheapest route he went and he finished within a year to save him on tuition. He then received five different offers, and took an Management offer, earning over 6 figures. What a great testimony for Online Education. :)

The National Accreditation for WGU is DECT... I guess the big question is how universities see DECT? How reputable, know, respectable, received is DECT? Most of the info I have read is directly from DECT which leaves me wanting third-party input.

A degree from WGU for graduate admission at traditional/regional accredited is not a problem; however, I am not sure about transferring credits as WGU is on competency base. If you want to know others National Accredited institutions can be transferred; then visit CHEA's HETA Database. Western Governors University, American Public University, and American Military University are considering as regional accredited schools.

DETC degree is fine if you plan to stay in public and private sectors. The reputation is not high as regional accredited institutions' degrees. However, there are limitation for further education and employment in academia.

Not exactly true......many Master's programs have pre-requisites. For example, most MBA programs require "leveling" courses for applicants without a business or management undergrad degree. Those leveling courses don't count towards the graduate program requirements.

Thanks for the feedback, guys. I contacted admissions for several masters programs I am interested in, including Harvard Extension. They said it all depended on the program I was going into.

    Thanks again.

This might not make sense, but their regional accreditation trumps their national accreditation. I know that this seems weird, but in the US Regional accreditation trumps National Accreditation. WGU is regionally accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. This is the same organization that accredits UNLV, Brigham Young, and the University of Washington.

For your purposes, you can ignore their DETC accreditation. Other universities won't bother paying attention to DETC accreditation since they have regional accreditation. Just pay no attention to it.
