I want to estimate the cost of studying On-line as an undergraduate student at UNISA.

Based on 2012 prices, here is what I have determined:

    • ZAR 100.00 application fee
    • ZAR 1140.00 per module + ZAR 850.00 per module for the foreign levy
    • ZAR 130.00 per semester to check marks
    • cost of traveling to the nearest exam center each semester

Are there any additional fees or costs I should consider? My program has 9 modules and lasts 3 years, so it should cost about $2000. Does that sound about right?

Some degrees are a tiny bit more expensive than others but once you do the conversion it's quite a small sum. I have heard that once you have established yourself in the school they are sometimes willing to consider an alternative testing site that can be closer to your home, thus minimizing your travel expenses. There is likely to be a graduation fee. Typical Bachelors degrees are three years long but I would recommend doing the fourth Honors year as well. I would also recommend that you plan on going through the degree equivalency process if you are planning on working anywhere other than South Africa.

For me, they (UNISA) sends me a bill. It has gone up every year since I was accepted in the program (July 2009), I think it started at $1900 for the year and last year I believe it was $2200. I have not received the bill for 2012-2013, but I am thinking it will be close to $2400. Still very reasonable.

If I remember correctly they allow you to pay by credit card and so you don't need to worry about counting pennies due to fluctuating conversion rates.

    Kizmet,

You are correct. That is how I pay.

About how much can I expect this to cost? Is the charge per module, per degree, or a single rate coverign all credits?

I am a British prospective international student seeking to study at UNISA. For several weeks I have been unable to contact the university to find out information about the length and cost of their programmes. I would like to study the MA in Development Studies (full dissertation), I understand from the UNISA website that this is a 180 credit course. I have several questions about MAs at UNISA.

Above, respondents say that it costs as little as 2,000 USD per year to study at UNISA. Is this true for international students?

Can a full-dissertation course such as the MA in Development Studies be completed entirely at a distance?

How long would this course take, could it be completed in under one year?

On the UNISA website tuition/costs are currently stated as:

The Research Proposal Module carries a fee of approximately R3 000. (What is the research module?) Is it required every year for every course)?

In addition, each year of study will cost between R8 500 and R11 000 for master’s degree studies (depending on the degree). International students, excluding students from Africa, must pay an additional foreign levy of approximately R5 000 per year.

Does this mean that a course such as the MA in Development Studies in 2012 would cost a maximum of 19,000R per year (11,000 MA studies+5,000 international student+3000 research module).

    Thanks
