    Hello everyone,

I am looking to see if you guys recommend any students attending Grand Canyon University. I'm actually attending Strayer University online as of right now and planning on transferring to GCU. Reasons? I finished high school with an extremely low GPA (1.75) and tried to continue my education through community college, however the community college I was planning to transfer had awful professors and graduation rate was a low 13%, therefore I found Strayer University as one of my options. When I started at Strayer University, I did not planned to graduate, only yet my only reason is to get enough transfer credits and to transfer to one of the better university. I have visited GCU and the campus programs are great as well as the student lives. However, is the programs worth the cost and is GCU recognize by potential employers?

I would think Strayer and GCU are a bit expensive and community colleges would be a better option - even one that is not your local CC - there are community colleges that offer degrees online at reasonable prices.

Honestly, I have nothing against accredited institution either regional or national. The only thing I concern is for-profit school. If you have option to obtain your degree from top schools or public schools; then do so to avoid any criticism. As most DegreeInfo.com members know the different accreditation, but you will never know who you will encounter in the future that will criticize your degree. I used to have a Manager, who would not take a look any resume with University of Phoenix, Strayer University, and Westwood College.

What program you're looking for? If you are looking for Bachelor degree level; there are many better schools out there that cost you less.

I agree with what good the doctor has said. There are far better options than Strayer and GCU. Check with the Big 3 (Excelsior, TESC, and Charter Oak), you can transfer some--if not all-- of your Strayer credits towards a degree from any of the Big Three.

I understand avoiding for-profit schools are a concern to many people, however, the reason why I chose for-profit schools is because of my low GPA in high school. I applied to local universities and they have rejected all of my applications. The community college is cheap, but my concern was the professors or instructor that taught in the CC, and what's troubling was the fact the graduation rate was so low. As far as I am in Strayer University, I have a total of 36 quarter hours (24 semester hours) and my GPA stands at 3.75. If I transfer to GCU, they are offering me an scholarships of $7,000 ($3,500 per semester) as an transfer student, for every year that I keep my GPA above 3.5. I found that very reasonable, but I am still deciding if other universities are willing to offer any scholarships for transfer students as well.

Community College graduation rates are very misleading because students tend to stop in and out because they are not traditional students. If you are not happy with your local community college, I would recommend that you look at Clovis Community College in NM. Classes start Monday, but you should be able to get registered if you have unofficial transcripts you can fax to them. Three of my children, along with my wife, have taken classes from Clovis, and they all have been pleased with the experience.

It is somewhat annoying that people post a specific request for input on a particular program and the first 7-10 responses are specifically NOT answering the questions but telling them to rethink the premise of their original decision.

    #justsaying.

Answer - in my opinion, no

Queestion - GCU recognize by potential employers?
Answer - I do not know, ask your potential employer

    Is that better?

We only try to help the OP in the economical way. Honestly, if they did not give me this kind of advices 8 years ago. I might ended up with Kennedy-Western University (Warren National University) undergraduate degree.

As far as GCU is a legit school with B&M campus; there is not really much complain about the school. I would recommend to take these reviews as part of considerations.

Then make your own decision, we cannot help you the decision.

I graduated from GCU in 2007, with my first Masters degree. It has been over 5 years since I graduated from there so the program has probably changed. I had 0 problems when I attended. The staff were helpful as were the instructors. It took me about 18 months to complete my Masters, I would of finished sooner, but I also had fractured my leg throughout that time, so took some months off. I will admit that it is pricey, as are most for profits and you could save a great deal of money if you did attend a local college or find cheaper online distance learning options elsewhere. I also have two for profit degrees, which have not hindered my chances at all for employment, degrees are just one part of the equation, being the right candidate for the job, and actually having the know how and skill sets to do a job, is what makes you an even stronger and competitive candidate...ok off my soap box now!

Thank you scaredrain for your input. I'm likely to transfer from Strayer University to GCU because my fiancee is starting as a freshmen. They do have wonderful programs and I spoke to a lot of instructors/professors that the business education at GCU is great. As for tuition, including scholarships and renewable scholarships, I believe it's a lot cheaper than what people think. Let's do the math here..

16,500 (full time student 32-36 2 semesters tuition) - 5,550 (full pell grant because of my EFC=0) - 7,000 (renewable scholarships if I keep up my GPA above 3.5) - 500 (early registration scholarship) = 3,450 tuition + 1175 (fees & books) = 4,625 for a full 32 credits 2 semesters a year! Since I'm transferring 24 semesters credit, I should be done within 3 years. I have already emailed Arizona State University and George Mason University about if they accept GCU degree and transcript credits after graduating from GCU in 2015, they approved that GCU can transfer into their graduate programs.
