Is PHD from IGNOU ( India) recognised in USA?

Hi,

I plan to pursue phd ( distance learning) from Indira Gandhi National Open university ( IGNOU) . My question is it recognized in USA ?

I work as lecturer and want to enroll in phd program .

Any pointers would be appreciable. I want to ensure it is recognised before I spent 3-4 years of my life into it.

You can always do a preevaluation of the degree by using WES and see if it would be considered as equivalent to an RA degre.

Now, one thing is that is recognized as a legal degree in the US and other that is recognized by companies and universities for hiring purposes.

If you are planning to work in the US with a degree from India, there are only few schools that are recognized such as Indian school of business and Indian Institute of Technology. Anything else is not going to be an easy sell even with a positive WES equivalency.

You might be able to sell the Indian PhD if you hold certifications in demand such as CPA or CFA or if have publications in top journals such as Management Science.

 

The degree will be recognized. You may have to pass it though an evaluation service. If you have a contact that will provide answers please share their name with me. I have sent several emails trying to get information on the Masters in Social Work - all with no success. Good luck!

 

The problem is I called WES but they replied that they won't evaluate unless you have degree in hand !

Its a chicken and egg problem..

I want to know prehand if evaluation services like WES will recognize and give US equivalent of PHD if I do through IGNOU?

 

There is a preevaluation service that costs about 20 bucks. This can be done before your enroll. I did this with my own doctorate before I enrolled and got a positive evaluation after graduation.

 

RFValve , I have contact several evaluation services and they all respond that they don't have such a pre- evaluation service and in order to give any statment for any institute they ask to submit transcript . if you have the link for that service you have mentioned ,please share it with us

I have an academic membership so I can preview the status of the degree. I checked and Indira Gandhi National Open University is in the list of recognized Indian Schools.

You can pay $25 and see it by yourself but the degree is in the list so it should be recognized by WES. However, bear in mind that not because WES recognizes it means that employers will recognize it.
If you want to use it for teaching, it is not usual to see people with terminal degrees from India teaching in the US but only from highly recognized places such as IIT and IBS.

Another strategy that you might consider is to do a thorough google search for IGNOU grads and see where they're working. We did this once a long time ago and discovered that there were UNISA PhDs teaching all over the world. Please let us know what you find.

I wanted to know if it will be approved in the USA, since I am planning to move and look for job In US. And also, my specialization is Human Resource. If you are interested to do your social work education in India , Tata Institute of Social Sciences ( in Mumbai, North India) is the best in the country for social work edu. It is really good. Plz go through their website ( you can take email and phone no there) and get to know the application submission, and admission dates., they may have entrance test. I don't know what is the criteria for international students..
If you are looking for mental health and psychiatry related specialization ( psychiatric Social Work) in social work. In south India there is 'National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences' at Bangalore. ( go throu their web site, this is best in psychiatry social work).
And in Chennai, 'Madras school of Social work' is another one among the top rank school for MSW in south and north India.
Sorry, I dont have any personal ph. nos of faculties from these schools..
