Forensic psychology seems a lot like criminology and I wonder how it is regarded in CJ circles. I'm considering going that route, since no standard American CJ or criminology doctorate other than Nova's is available online and I really can't take traditional classes right now with my work and family life (Walden and Capella should really try to make their CJ specializations into traditional CJ degrees). Public administration, management and policy degrees aren't for me either. I plan to retire from police work in a few years and want to spend my 50s and 60s teaching or training in a community college, tech school or academy. Walden's PhD in forensic psychology seems pretty straight forward and interesting, so I'm thinking it would be a good capstone to a police career. Thanks for any advice.

From one who has gone "off watch" I think psychology is a great choice.I have gone the counseling route though. I dont find this a radical departure from the old job as I seemed to be doing a lot of unstructured counseling in the job.

Forensic psyche would be an excellent choice as this is really such an element of policing and it gives good options post policing. I chose counseling myself because it builds on my existing skills base, gives me some autonomy over my work environment and is portable. Counseling and/forensic psych would be good additions to CJ degrees. We are not all going to be administrators.

Thanks for your insight! I'd also thought about counseling.
