    Hi,

I've been lurking for a long time and you all have inspired me to get my behind in gear and go back to school to get a masters. One major problem. I graduated 10 years ago with a BA in English Lit and a dismal 2.0 overall GPA  (yes, I stupidly partied my behind off). I have spoken to an old professor and she recommended I pursue a second BA to improve my GPA in order to possibly qualify for admission to a masters program (at this point any program, since my BA in English Lit gets me nothing but admin jobs).

Since I am no longer in the same state, I was wondering what the cheapest way to do this via online/DL was? I am looking for a low-cost, non-profit RA state school since at least three of my previous employers have all looked down on for-profit schools (the HR dept at one of them had a list of school names posted in their office to screen potential applicants) and I want to give myself the best chance at getting a better job and getting into a reputable masters program.

    Thanks for your help.

The problem with your situation that most of your courses are not transferable unless C or B above. The best bet is starting with the big Three through CLEP, DANTES, FEMA and etc. Big Three (Excelsior College, Thomas Edison State College, and Charter Oak State College).

I had an overall 2.0 GPA for undergrad and was denied entry to the masters program I really wanted. The minimum GPA for the program was a 2.75. I wrote an appeal letter stating the reason for my low GPA (youthful stupidity) and all the accomplishments I have made since then. I was conditionally accepted to the program.

My advice is to apply to a graduate program and be prepared to appeal if you get denied. Find out what the appeal process is before applying. Sometimes you need a certain GPA just to be allowed to appeal.

    Hi,

Here are some options for you (the majors are all over the place - I don't know if you're interested in something specific):

    Communicative Disorders & Deaf Education

2nd Bachelor's Degree - Bachelor of Science in Information Technology

Computer Science -- Undergraduate Degrees Online -- Online & Distance Degrees -- Oregon State University -- Extended Campus -- Ecampus

I believe that University of Maryland - University College allows applicants to complete any of their online programs as a second degree.

What about getting an online Master's/Graduate certificate?

It seems like that would mean fewer classes than a B.A., and show your aptitude for graduate-level studies more.

I, too, would suggest applying to the schools, noting your accomplishments since college.

I agree, don't waste your time or money pursuing a second bachelors degree. You should be able to find a graduate program in the area of your interest that will accept you!

I was with a friend eating lunch and an old classmate came up and started telling him how she got an A in a class they took together years ago and he got a C. He smiled and said in his heavy New York accent, "Yeah well, I graduated!"

    Move forward! :)

I agree with Delta and others, don't waste your time with a second bachelor's. Even though your GPA is not impressive, it's still a "C" average. It's not like you flunked out. If you tried hard enough, you could probably get into a masters program at one of the online schools. Some of them have very low entry requirements yet are still good schools. I'd bet you could get in if you talk to the right people.

Don't just apply, talk to some people on the phone. Explain your situation, you may be surprised.
