    hello

anyone know where i can take these math courses online: intermediate algebra, finite math, or college algebra.

Also...would i have to show that I've taken a prerequisite or show placement test results to register?

Excelsior College offers these courses online. Also, if your school accepts ACE evaluated credits, you might want to consider Straighterline courses too.

Courses-Independent Study in Idaho-University of Idaho $300 bucks or so.
University of Arkansas Independent Study Online Courses $300 bucks or so...College Algebra was a bear here though.
Colorado State University-Pueblo > Math $500 ish, not too much to choose from. CSU Pueblo Con Ed class staff are AWESOME to work with. Taking classes here was a unique pleasure.
LSU Independent and Distance Learning $300 ish, but I hear they are tough.
University Online Course Catalog - BYU Independent Study

I doubt any of these will require proof of pre-requisates, even if they state they are required. I know U of Arkansas will let you in without them. I believe all will require at least a few proctored exams.

Where are you going to school? Is Straighterline or ALEKS an option? How about the CLEP or DSST exams? College Math is considered rather manageable with a little background and study. The DSST College Algebra may be a little easier than the College Algebra CLEP....depends on who you ask! :)

AMU offers College Algebra - it's a bit on the pricey side, however does not require any pre-reqs - just sign up and take the course.

thanks for the list. I'll check them out.

I go to UMUC and i'm one class from my degree (college algebra). But here is my dilemma. I haven't taken any kind of math course in over 20 years. I'd do very poorly on any kind of algebra placement test right now.

If I go through UMUC but for this course they are requiring me to start at Beginner Algebra, then Intermediate Algebra, then College Algebra. I could take the clep for College Algebra but i have no chance of passing it.

my other option is to find a school where i can take it online and get tutoring and just hope that i can pass it with a C.

or another option is to enroll at my local CC for Beginner Algebra just so i can learn the fundamentals again and get my brain used to math again. Then i could get some tutoring and go for the clep.

I highly recommend taking APUS' College Algebra - I took it after having been away from it for as long as you have; the prof and the course were excellent with lots of student support from other students, the prof, and the sites they use to help you make it through.

I would immerse myself in aleks intermediate algebra for a week or so, locate a tutor and order the book from university of Idaho. Once your tutor and book arrive sign up and get busy with the specific work your gonna be tested on....meet the tutor for a couple hours every week a day or so before any exam. Bust this out in 6-8 weeks, its very doable if your committed. My daughter followed the tutor advice along with aleks, wound up with a very high score on the dsst college algebra. The important thing is to bang away at it till you have conquered.

I'm in almost the same boat - in September Algebra will be the last class between me and my BS at Excelsior. I've become almost math phobic. Aleks didn't do it for me, at least yet. Sooooooooo.... not sure what I'm going to do and/or how I'm going to do it.

I had the same problem, ultimately Straighterline was the answer (with mathway tool and a tutor for a short time). Just won't work for the OP.

I recommend the book "Painless Algebra" or "Painless Pre-Algebra." Both are Barron's publications and I saw both at Costco last week. Or they are on amazon or barnes&noble online for $1 used or $10 new.

I suggest reading these and noodling around on the short exercises as a way to "warm-up" your math muscles. Try to think of it as a puzzle or game, not a do-or-die thing. There's also Painless Geometry. I'm waiting for Painless Calculus - lol! Not sure that there is such a thing. I took Calculus at UW almost 30 years ago (got a 3.2 if I remember correctly) but remember none of it and am trying to brush up.

There are also the "Standard Deviants" Math DVDs which are -great- as they put things into simple-to-understand-everyday-language... may find them cheap on Amazon, or request them at your local library...
