    Hi everyone,

I'm interested in pursing my degree online or at a local B&M in California in the field of I/O Psychology.

    I'm looking at these programs:

Touro University Worldwide: MA in I/O Psychology (Online Program - 33 Units / 11 classes)

    California State University - Long Beach (38 Units - B&M / 12 classes)

Grand Canyon Univesity (36 Units, but really 34 units because the two are "getting use to online learning at GCU, which I'm not really up to spending time and money on remedial classes that I figure out on my own by my own / 10 classes).

I am more inclined to pursue the degree with Touro University Worldwide because I want really don't want to spend more than I need to obtain my Master's and I like their format. I figure, if I wanted to do the coursework at a slower pace, I could finish in two years by taking one class each 8 weeks (roughly 5/6 a year).

Here is my goal: I want to teach both B&M and online classes in Psychology. I like stats and researching, I could teach those types of classes (seeing that I/O emphasizes on both). I am later thinking about pursing my PhD in I/O at Grand Canyon, since it's the cheapest for all the online programs out there.

I'm wondering if anyone here has any experience in the field of I/O? I know that there are other online colleges like Baker, NC, Capella, UoP, but I don't want to spend the money on those more expensive schools. I'm looking to spend under $20K for the whole program or less. This is the biggest factor. Also, I'm not looking for Nationally Accredited institutions; RA only :)

    Thanks for your help.

I don't believe it does. I'm not trying to counsel anyone. I want to teach. Also, I was thinking... is there a difference in a masters class in comparison to the units for the degree. For example:

    TUW is 33 units @ 11 classes.
    Baker is 57 units @ 15 classes
CSU Long Beach is 36* sorry not 38 @ 12 classes
    GCU is 36 units @ 10 classes

I just wonder if a master's degree weight is heavily weighted upon the number of units or the number of classes, or both?

BTW, I/O Psychology falls under section 14 of APA. They don't accredit I/O degrees (What are SIOP and I-O Psychologists?). I believe only counseling, clinical counseling and other social science terminal degrees can be APA accredited.

In California, there is no license needed to practice I/O Psychology: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) - California Board of Psychology It only is required to practice on humans. I/O is not a field that one can be called a Psychologist.

You should also look into the field of Human Factors Psychology/Egineering. I believe University of Idaho has a degree in that subject. Sound like a very interesting and fulfilling career field. It might be a little related to I/O psych. Kansas State has an online I/O program. And, if I remember correctly, so does Dayton? Or Maybe it was Ball State? Someone near Wright-Patterson Air Base has a DL I/O program.

    Good luck,

Baker College is on quarter system, which 57 quarters equal to 38 semester credits.

Also all the schools you have listed, I would recommend CalState - LB. Check out Master of Applied Industrial/Organizational Psychology at Colorado State University

    Hello,
I spent a lot of time researching several IO Psych. programs before making a final decision. I am a student at Touro in there IO program and I am very happy with the curriculum, the professors and class colleagues. Tuition was a factor for me as well and Touro offers excellent scholarships which make their program very affordable. Good luck in your search.

    NYAIM,

Wow... thank you for your insight! Are there requirements for the scholarship? Can you describe the scholarships you obtained? Just curious. :)

A range of Tuition Assistance Programs (TAP) scholarships are available with up to 40% - For details I would suggest speaking with the department chair - let me know I can provide more info directly to you.

I was a student at Touro University International (later sold off to/as TUI/Trident). I have concerns about Touro University Worldwide because of what happened to me when Touro University International was sold off. My transcripts now reside with Trident and not the parent of Touro University International which is Touro College (where they belong). Trident was recently in danger of losing their accreditation and I was concerned over what would happen to my records. I contacted Touro University International/Touro College several times and did not have any success in moving my transcipts back under the Touro College umbrella. I have looked at a few of the Touro University Worldwide programs but can not bring myself to ever consider taken a class with them since they really did screw their Touro University International students.

I know of one person that lost her adjunct work because she had a PhD from Touro University International but her records were tied to Trident when they were on a Show Cause state. When I contacted the Student Clearing House my records showed that I had an MS from Trident, not Touro University International. I had to work to get that changed. If I was looking for a job and a background check would have been done I probably would have failed because of this. Just be aware of their history and what they did with their last online division and the nightmare it created.

    Hi Randell,

I want to thank you for providing me your valuable feedback. I'm sorry to hear about your sour experience with TUI.

However, I have a few questions... Are saying that if you earn a degree from a college/university while they were accredited, and later that college/university loses their accreditation, does you degree become null or lose value? Does your degree, while under the umbrella of an accredited institution, loses is merit once the institution loses it's accreditation?

How badly did it affect your personal endeavors when your degree was "sold off" to Trident? I know that Trident has been having some bad publicity lately with their accreditation.

I wonder if TUW regenerated their online program having an expectation that they would learn from their past experience and prevent this from reoccurring again? I know that TUW I/O Program was recently accredited in 2011 and it seems that this online platform is new to the "market". I don't know how this would affect those receiving a degree from TUW, but I am interested in this program for a few reasons:

    1. The cost factor ($500 per unit with a possibility to earn a scholarship opportunities to decrease that price, making it a competitive price range compared to other colleges/universities)
    2. The curriculum and it's format (Fall-Fall -Sum - Spr-Spr) All 8 weeks with 1 to 2 weeks break in between each sub 8 week semester.
    3. It's a solely online (no residency) format that offers a degree in I/O Psychology (A major that interests me a lot)
    4. It's accredited by WASC; it's located in CA. (my region's accreditation; not that any other accrediting institution is lesser but I like the fact that it's a local university that I can drive to for commencement rather than fly)
    5. It doesn't require the GRE or other formal tests for acceptance.

I realize that there is no such thing as a "perfect" college, so does anyone else have any other experience with TUI (or another institution for that matter) that they could share? Can anyone please provide me any con's that I'm not seeing. I feel it's always good to get different perspectives to weigh out all attributes of a college. Thank you all for your insight.

    Best Regards,

    D^2

However, I have a few questions... Are saying that if you earn a degree from a college/university while they were accredited, and later that college/university loses their accreditation, does you degree become null or lose value? No the degree is still accreditied because it was earned when the school was accredited (BTW - Trident never did end up losing the accreditiation)

Does your degree, while under the umbrella of an accredited institution, loses is merit once the institution loses it's accreditation? No, see answer above

How badly did it affect your personal endeavors when your degree was "sold off" to Trident? I know that Trident has been having some bad publicity lately with their accreditation. It really didn't. It made me more mad then anything. I purposely selected TOURO because (1) it was a non-profit, (2) was connected to a respected B&M school, (3) had a solid rep in the NY area where the company I work for had their headquaters (4) and it had a great deal! With the military discount I paid $750 per 4 credit graduate course. The entire MS-ITM cost me $6,750

I wonder if TUW regenerated their online program having an expectation that they would learn from their past experience and prevent this from reoccurring again? Or did they learn they culd build a program and sell it off and make a boat load of money? Now they are planning to do it again...?

Haha I was thinking that too, but just didn't mention it because I was being optimistic about the topic.

Randell, in the case of your friend, how did it specifically cost her the adjunct position? Did she get her degree when it Trident was on "Show Cause"? I'm curious to know more about this... also, I'm not planning on pursing my PhD at a later time; Because I want to adjunct online and at my local B&M, I'm sure I can begin my part-time instructing with a Master from TUW.

Also, I'm glad that your circumstance did not affect your personal endeavors. I know it affected you on a personal (emotional) level (which is completely understandable). However, I would like to say this event could happen to anyone who earned a degree from any other private school. Again I'm sorry it happened to you.

Things are so uncertain in life, but it doesn't demerit your intelligence and/or credibility if your transcript comes from Trident or TUI (in my opinion). Also, when we think about it, our degrees are ultimately going to transfer to one place; the grave! We cannot take our degrees with us when we pass away, but I understand that it's truly about the principle and that's your gripe. I would say, try to dis-harbor your anger/frustration about your circumstance because you'll never be free from the offense until you just don't let it bother you anymore. BTW, I think you got heck of a deal for your Master's Degree. You should be proud of your accomplishments, not your affiliations as mentioned on another user's post. It's the most "simplest" truth you can accept about the circumstance.

    Best Regards,

She earned the PhD from Touro University International in like '03 so it was pre-Trident. I never got all the details but she adjuncted at at University of Georgia (I think) and they just told her that they can not offer classes until the situation is resolved.

BTW, I think you got heck of a deal for your Master's Degree. I know, almost unreal
You should be proud of your accomplishments, not your affiliations as mentioned on another user's post. Yeah...well...easier said then done! I guess you got me there.
