I think article shows the need and evolution of new educational modes in obtaining education. These new ways must include features that lower tuitions so that the average student (non DI soldier) does not accumulate $200k in debt. I think it was Steve Jobs who once said some day everyone would be doing their dl classes on their iphones or laptops any time of the day or night that they want. I personally think a thrust for the low cost DL courses will become a necessity, and employers will see this DL buckskin and consider it with experience, and the job seekers interview skills.

Times are changing at a rapid pace. I am happy to have done some of my education via DL. The other ten years were spent at a CC.

The idea of tiered pricing at the ivy league schools is quite interesting:

"Some schools facing economic challenges see online education as a source of revenue, but top-tier schools are currently making their courses available free of charge. In the future, I suspect these schools will introduce a variable cost structure for different kinds of courses. A successful online program will strengthen the brand and increase the demand for the “real” Harvard, Yale or Princeton education. "

This interesting because I was listening to the Parliamentary Opposition Finance Spokesman being interviewed. He indicated that he expects Australian Distance learning (online variety) to cater for millions of foreign students over the next 6 to ten years. He was quite disparaging of institutions retreating to B & M or perhaps failing to go beyond B & M. He called them dinosaurs. The opposition are factoring the income into their budget estimates in the future.

I am not sure if he sees this being in conjunction with India or for Indian students. He seemed to include India in the equation. He is very likely to be the Finance Minister after the next election. The polls clearly indicate that the current government is not likely, by a country mile, to retain government. Australia has had a long tradition with distance learning so nobody raises an eyebrow down here about it. They are more about making sure they have a strong foothold in the market, than arguing about quality.

Asia is going to be very strong in DL so it seems. Perhaps the world leaders if they lay it alongside their IT strength.

Amen bro, I grinded it out at a community college for ten years before I made the jump to DL. At the community college, they kept changing the prerequisites every semester. After a while it felt more like a business as they were doing anything they could to keep you in. I'm glad to be out of that rat race for sure!
