    Hello!
I am a SAHM (Stay at home mom) to two young children and I am currently wrapping up my BS degree in Sociology from ESC. Prior to attending ESC, I attended LIU Brooklyn Campus in the flesh :)

I am interested in pursuing a Master’s degree in public health and was hoping to gather some information on American Public University’s Public Health program. I am aware that it is not CEPH accredited at the moment, but APU has submitted an application for accreditation with CEPH and they are affordable.

I finish my BS degree this August and I really want to start this fall as opposed to waiting for Spring 2013 but I have missed all of the deadlines to start in the fall for all of the CEPH MPH online programs that are affordable for me and do not require or will waive the GRE. (Although I have 3.7 cum, I hate standardized tests and wish to avoid one at all costs)

The other options I am considering:
1.Attending APU for one term and then transferring the credits into a CEPH accredited program that will accept them as electives if not core, in Spring 2013
2.Electing to obtain a certificate in a special area of public health from somewhere else and go for the MPH within a year, which I imagine couldn’t hurt in the long run.

    Advice welcomed and appreciated :)
    Thanks in advance!

Check out Des Moines University. They offer an online, CEPH-accredited MPH. The GRE is not required.

I would consider carefully attending a non-CEPH program. many county and state health departments require a CEPH degree for employment.

I don't think you can transfer units from a non-CEPH school to one that is accredited. In any case, it's a mistake to try in a professional Master's degree. There really are not enough units in the degree to transfer.

The University of West Florida is cheaper than APU even for non-Florida residents and is CEPH accredited

If you're afraid of standardized tests, I would urge you to get help rather than make educational plans based upon this.

I looked at this program but unfortunately the deadline has already past. I didn't anticipate graduating this summer but due to the changes in student loans and pell grants, I had to force myself to take 5 courses and get it over with and I don't want to wait until the spring.

Maybe I'll look into certificate programs to take for now in one of the public health specializations in the fall and prepare for the GRE and do my apps for public health programs for the following year, is that a bad idea?

If you are really interested in a program, call the academic coordinator and ask if there is any way you can petition for late entry. You'd be surprised how often they will allow it.

Des Moines University and the GRE

Actually Des Moines University does require the GRE or a comparable standardized test, unless one has a Masters already.

Frequently asked questions - Des Moines University

Yes, applicants must supply the results of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Applicants who have already earned a master’s degree or higher are not required to submit GRE scores. Results from the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT), Medical College Admission Test (MCAT), or Law School Admission Test (LSAT) may be substituted for the GRE. There is no minimum score required for application. This is a new admission requirement in 2012, therefore there is no average score to report. The Des Moines University GRE code is: 2256.

Bummer. As you can see from the above statement, this is a new requirement.

University of New England offers an online MPH which recently earned CEPH accreditation. I just checked their site and they do NOT require the GRE. Tuition for this 46-credit program is $570/credit. Application deadline for the Fall 2012 term is August 6th.

    • Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited undergraduate institution, or international equivalent, with a major that is relevant to the student’s professional goals.
    • Undergraduate cumulative GPA or 3.0 or better.
    • College-level courses in mathematics and science with a minimum grade or “B” or satisfactory completion of a graduate level course in mathematics or science. In lieu of college-level courses in either, students may submit GRE subject test scores in mathematics or science, or the GRE quantitative ability score.

UNE also offers an 18-credit graduate certificate in Public Health.
