    Another WNMU thread!
Has anyone successfully transferred in grad courses into the MAIS program at WNMU?
I live in Texas and would love to take one or two classes that are either regional or just not offered within the WNMU history program. I know that they allow two courses to be transferred in. OR I can do a grad certificate if I can find one that is reasonably priced.

I have successfully transferred one graduate history course (3 hrs.) to the MAIS program. I had to provide a syllabus, and some of the actual coursework completed. It took some convincing, but they eventually allowed it into the program. I think they allow up to six hours, as long as the courses have the proper course prefix to fit into your program, i.e. if you want to transfer a history course, then the course needs to be titled HIS - blah in some way.

My guess if you can take courses elsewhere if you want, and if they are approved ahead of time. I would ask your concentration's advisor in order to see if they would allow it. I would suggest that you plan ahead, and ask -the earlier the better. This is one of those procedures that seems to move slow in my experience. One of those things where you have to get the nod from several people before its officially OKAY.

    I hope that helps Linbored!

I transferred in 6 PolySci credits. It took some work because at first they didn't want to let me, and I kept bugging them. Finally I provided course descriptions and syllabi, and they took them.

Great thanks Paidagogos and Matt. One more question, were the hours acquired before you started the program or during? Would it make a difference? I asked Jessica and she said it goes on a case by case basis and it's up to the adv. of the department.

Mine were acquired before enrolling and during. I started the WNMU program to get 18 hours in both political science and history so that I could teach dual enrollment courses at the high school where I work. Because I already had an MS, I was more concerned with the credits than I was with the degree. I figured if they didn't transfer it wouldn't be that big of a deal anyway, because I could just get the credits. I found out about the WNMU program too late to start in the fall of 2008, so I applied to start in the spring of 2009. Fortunately, APU starts classes each month, so I did an Oct-Nov course and a Dec-Jan course. When I had started my first semester at WNMU, I was still finishing up the APU course. There was about a 2 week overlap.

I explained all of this in detail to my advisor, and it did take some work and some assistance from the amazing folks at APU, but I finally got the credits transferred. The funny thing is, I had misinterpreted the catalog. I already had an MS, so it said I only needed 30 credits for a second graduate degree. I also saw that you could transfer in 6 credits, so I assumed I could pile this on and therefore only need 24 credits at WNMU. That's not how it works, though! Going in with an MS already, they "assume" a transfer of 6 credits, and that's why the second degree is dropped down to 30. I didn't really care, so I transferred the courses anyway, and now I have a transcript that reflects 18 hours in both disciplines.

This was basically my experience, as well. You will definitely have to be diligent if you want a class to transfer Lin.
