Erskine (RA/ATS, founded in the mid-1800's) is the seminary of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church. The school is a member of the Atlanta Theological Association, along with Columbia Theological Seminary and several others. ETS offers several graduate degrees, including the MDiv and DMin.

Does anyone have personal experience with Erskine?

Don't you have a D.Min from there? Do they have DL or are they only residential?

    Hello Russell:

Just fyi Gore ,VP and Dean, of Erskine Seminary (who also has BA, MA from non RA BJU) is also prof of Theology at Trinity Seminary in Indiana. He was my prof for Systematic Theology 1,2.

What lately has been on my mind is whether non accredited Christian schools and Christians who support them are ethical. I just raise the issue..not condeming! Just thinking about it!

Yes, Craig, I completed the D.Min. at Erskine in '96. Their program is not DL, although I was allowed to take 6 hours via DL, which would be 1/6 of the program. ATS guidelines specify that only 1/3 of a program can be taken via DL.

I was curious as to whether anyone else had experience with Erskine.

Dr. Gore was not at Erskine when I attended there, I think he came in 97 or 98. He also has a Ph.D. from Westminster, which is RA. While Bob Jones is not RA, their programs would probably align with most any RA school in the country---plus their hyper-fundamentalism.

I too have often wondered why RA credentialed faculty teach at unaccredited institutions--perhaps for financial reasons.

    Gore's MA, PhD

In a most non-judgmental way I would like to use Dr Gore's ed background to pose a question.

Dr. Gore is VP and Dean at Erskine Seminary. His MA is from Bob Jones. BJU is substantial and has a quality program I am told. But it is not accredited (and I'm told chooses not to be)by any government approved agency.

Yet the unaccredited MA from BJU was accepted by the accredited Westminster and Dr Gore completed there the PhD.

Therefore, in this isolated case an unaccredited degree served quite well its purpose. It had adequate utility. How repeatable is this ?

    Re: Gore's MA, PhD

Dr. Gore does indeed have a BA and MA from BJU. He also holds the MA from St. Charles Borromeo Seminary, and the MA and STM from Faith Theological Seminary, both located in Pennsylvania.

    re Gore

Then, as per the Erskine site, Dr Gore went from the unaccredited BJU into the accredited Faith Seminary. So, again, his unaccredited degree served his needs and had utility!

    Re: re Gore

I'm not sure what the process entailed for Dr. Gore specifically, however, there are indeed scenario's where one has been admitted into a RA master's program with a non-RA bachelor's degree. I know personally of cases where a student was allowed entrance into a master's program at a RA/ATS seminary, with a non-RA bachelor's degree. The student was placed on academic probation for one semester, did excellent, and completed the program with no problem.

I was sort of interested as after dropping out of high school I four years later enrolled in a non accredited Bible College. However an RA school accepted my BA and allowed me to do further work for the teaching certificate (School recommends, State gives these credentials). Again another accredited school allowed me into the MA with the unaccredited BA. Of course this was in the 60's.

You are not alone in your scenario, Bill. This is certainly not the norm, however, as in all things, exceptions are made and some do find access to higher degrees with a non-RA undergrad degree. As has been discussed on this forum, the HW MBA will allow some into the program with no bachelor's at all.
