I had a conversation with an online admissions rep with ASU to find out why the admission process was taking so long. Here's the entire conversation.

    Conversation
    SYSTEM: Welcome to IC!
    SYSTEM: Interaction transferred to ASU.
    SYSTEM: Interaction alerting Catalina Clark.
SYSTEM: Agent has joined the conversation.

Catalina Clark: Welcome to Arizona State University Online Chat! My name is Cali Clark, and I am an admissions counselor. How may I help you today?

Student: Hi. Im waiting to be admitted to ASU, and its been taking absolutely forever. Is there any way to see what the heck the holdup is? I dont have anything in my MyASU to do list and I got everything in to you guys a while ago.

Catalina Clark: Sure. What is your name? Also, are you working with an admissions counselor?

Student: My name is Natalie XXXXXXX. My student id is XXXXXXXXX. Im working with Amber Williams, but she said she doesnt know what the hold up is. So I thought I would come on here and see if anyone else can maybe tell me.

Catalina Clark: OK give me just a moment to look into your file. One thing I can tell you before I do that is, we have seen a huge influx of students in the last two weeks, and it is taking the admissions office a long time to scan and verify the transcripts.

Student: Ok. Wow. I didnt know that. No one mentioned that. I appreciate you looking at my file. Im just so anxious and impatient to be an official Sun Devil already!! lol

Catalina Clark: Ok Natalie I looked into your file, and we have received all your transcripts and that is exactly what the hold up is. They are just waiting to be scanned and verified and then your file will move into review and finally admitted. Then you can register for classes. Amber will contact you as soon as you move into review to keep you updated. Oh, and yeah Amber is new. I just learned all of this myself actually. I am so glad you are excited! Also, I don't know if you heard, but the California Universities have frozen all admissions so we have been seeing a ton of California students!

Student: Ok. Thanks so much for letting me know. Its maddening to be soooo close and yet so far away from being admitted. LOL Why have the California universities frozen admissions?????? Thats crazy!!

Catalina Clark: Yes, I understand. I have a few students stuck in this same position as well. Are you planning on starting this summer?

Catalina Clark: California schools are having budget issues and their cost of tuition wasn't covering their budget unfortunately.

Student: I just hope there will be some available classes when Im finally admitted. Im suppose to start on the 21st, and Im afraid all the classes will be filled up since there's so many new students coming in.

Catalina Clark: You will have plenty of time to enroll, our online students have priority in the online classes. When you are admitted we will also make sure you have an academic advisor to help you choose your classes.

Catalina Clark: Is there anything else I can help you with Natalie?

Student: No, thats everything. Thanks so much. Have a great day!!

Catalina Clark: Thank you, you as well!

Not so long ago California was an inexpensive alternative. What you see here is simply too many people going after too few spots. Immigration, the economy, poor stewardship...they are all taking their toll.

On the flip side with tens of thousands turning to online and distance alternatives the process we here at degree info hold dear are further legitimized and mainstream. I wouldn't want to be graduating into this economy...but right now is a great time to be an online student!
