What else would they have done? Become pharmacists and made less money? Lawyers and be lucky to have a job at all? Working stiffs like most of us and making a fraction of the salary?

Why do you think pharmacists make that much less?

Your reply indicates that you think that money is the only relevant factor. It's not.

The short answer: many don't. Anecdotal: I know three that make $150k a year.

Besides good pay they're also considered by the public to be one of the most trusted professionals.

It's a silly article. I read something similar two years ago about non-medical doctors, that 55% of people with phds regretted getting one. I bet if you asked divorcées 50% of them would say they regretted marrying their partner. Regret is a part of life. It would be shocking if there was a profession that was regret free.

To me its part of a larger social issue. Insofar as schools have a sorting function most colleges and uni do a terrible job of it. Americans have a cultural mind-set that children can grow up to be "whatever they want" but then we ask them to make major life decisions in their late teens early 20s when frankly they have only minimal adult life-experience and little formal guidance. It's not shocking then that so many make decisions based upon criteria like money or respect or social pressure and never take a hard look at whether their career is a good fit for their personality or life goals.

My niece is a PharmD and makes 75K part time (25 hours a week)

They do make less, when you include specialists (most of the physicians in the US).

Which is comparable to doctors in family medicine, but other specialties are much more lucrative.

True, but if you ask a doctor to trade in that expensive car and give up the things a doctor's income can provide, I would think that many would reconsider

Pharmacists have PharmDs, lawyers have JDs, so, technically, they are doctors and they do make good money.

You know that the survey did not include non-physicians.

You're right about that, Randell. I once read an article that said that a pharmacist could easily make $91,000 straight out of the doctorate. Not bad money.

And a PhD/DBA in Accounting can make $125,000 straight out of grad school.

There are a few different career/educational choices that I still kick myself over. Pharmacy is one of them. I was really good at chem in both high school and college. :pat:

I love how one commenter complains about "only" making 50-60 grand per year while in residency. I'd love for him/her to meet my Clinical Psych friends who, after graduating with their doctorates, went on food stamps in order to sustain themselves during their internships.

You got that right....I've had Ph.D./Psy.D. professors who left clinical/counseling work for academia because the Ivory Tower pays better, not because they didn't enjoy doing psychotherapy.
