Hello, everyone! I hope my title isn't too confusing. Let me explain. As many of you are aware, I was accepted to FHSU! Thanks again to everyone for your replies to my posts.

As per most suggestions, I am going to start with just one class over the summer semester. I chose "Survey of Art History." I know summer semesters are condensed, so this will give me a good feel of whether to take one or two courses during the fall.

My question is, I took English Comp 101 24 years ago. It transferred, of course, but it was a LONG time ago since a took a course on reading, writing assignments, essays, etc. I don't really feel like paying for a course I already took, but I am wondering if this type of class was helpful to everone when writing their papers and assignments.

Better yet, maybe there is a website out there that discusses college writing, which I can do a search for, or a book that was helpful to you.

It just seems like FHSU has a lot of writing assignments, and I want to make sure they appear "college level." I feel old at 41, lol!

Thank you for any suggestions you may have!

I did a google search and found something that might be helpful to me, and thought I would share it with all of you...

    Purdue OWL

It is called OWL, online writing lab. This might be what I was looking for. :)

Pick up a copy of the style manual specified by your department - many schools use the APA Publications Manual. It not a paper writing guide - more of a formatting guide. I use it for all the papers and reports I write just to be consistent.

Ian, thank you for the advice. I was just looking at some of the books available on Amazon. I see there are a few writing styles. I will see what my school uses. Great idea!

    Not really....

Honestly, Eng Comp I and II didnt do much for me as far as writing my papers went. Im not sure how FHSU works, but my previous school (Ashford University) and well as my current school (Schiller International University) require papers to be written in APA format. That has nothing to do with Eng Comp I or II. I will say they were good for grammar, punctuation, etc... So if you need a refresher course on those then it might be a good idea to take them. But if you know how to spell (or at least use spellcheck), you know how to use proper grammar and punctuation, and you can understand basic concepts of "look at this sentence and pick out the one that looks wrong" then you should be just fine without retaking them. Just learn APA formatting and you will go far in your writing.

OWL is a great resource, but it's not always updated as frequently as it should be....the APA 6th Edition Manual changes took awhile to be integrated. Then again, it's free, so no one should probably complain.

As Ian mentioned, find which method is used by FHSU, get the current manual, and study it to death. I would wager money it's going to be APA, but nothing in life is a sure thing, so check with the school directly.

Usually Humanities uses MLA and everyone else uses APA. Of course, there could always be an exception to that, but in general thats how it works.

I called FHSU and they said the same thing NMTTD said.

Ian and Bruce, I took your advice and asked the school what book they use. It is called "St. Martin's Guide to Writing." I will purchase the book, study it, and use that as my reference.

Again, thank you all for your help! :)
