This week's Chronicle of Higher Education, four pages after devoting a full page with banner headline to the story about the attack on DegreeInfo.com*, has the headline "Honor-Society Mills Flourish Online." The story features one of the many such services that, for a fee, will enroll anyone in a prestigious-sounding but worthless and often nonexistent organizations, such as the American Scholars National Honor Society. What is especially intriguing (but missed by the Chronicle reporter) is that the above-named honor society is supposed to be based at Columbia State University. Columbia State, biggest degree mill of the 90s, is no longer functioning, I think, but one never knows. There have been at least two major fake universities run from behind prison walls, where Columbia State's founder now sits. _____________ * Their extremely favorable story about DegreeInfo and its attack from diploma mill operators, has several threads on this forum
