Can anyone give me a piece of advice on the educational section of my resume? I have some doubts on whether to use Troy State on my resume.

I've just earned concurrently two degrees, an MBA from Cal State Univ. Los Angeles and a MA in Political Science from Cal State Uni. Long Beach; but two years ago I also graduated with a MS in Public Administration from Troy State University. Will it be a detriment to my getting a good job if I add Troy State on my resume...?? Will my prospective employers be under the impression that though one master degree sounded plenty enough having earned three mean sort of having been undecided and thus they might think that I can not be trusted with taking serious responsibilities..., etc..? Besides, it seems that Troy does not measure up to California State either...

    Thanks, John

  2. I'd look at it from the "job/position" viewpoint - use your toolbox to sell your capabilities.

If your looking for a sr. mgt position make your resume fit. If your looking for a mid level position, say 70K range just use one of your degrees.

I've had Ph.D's apply for positions in the 50K range - I always move on to the next resume.....

REMEMBER - IF YOU WANT IN - GET THE JOB....FIRST/ IF YOUR LOOKING TO GET PROMOTED - WORK YOUR TOOL BOX....

In an interview ask this question - Do you have any concerns about me ? then fill in the gaps/sell yourself/ use your toolbox

If I was doing the interviewing -The bottom line here would be your reason for the degree. If you were not clear as to the path, I'd pass on you.

    John,
If I were you I would not leave anything off your resume, especially a degree from an RA college. If you apply with a company, and they conduct a background investigation, they may come across your degree and wonder why you left it off your resume. What does he have to hide? Why did he give us an incomplete resume? Why did he not mention this obvious achievement? If your concerned that having 3 Masters may diminish thier worth collectively, I would just tell your prospective employers that you only wanted to learn and broaden your skills. During the course of an interview I would try to stress the California degrees the most, but not shy away from the Troy degree. Just a Thought.

    Good Luck,
    Frank

I would list all of the degrees (they are all accredited). My personal opinion is that your thirst for knowledge and enjoyment of learning is a selling point provided you are clear about your goals as they relate to whatever position you are applying for. In other words I would think that it would not be a problem if you don't come across as whishy washy & uncomitted at the interview and with reagrd to your fututre with their company.

I am working on an accredited doctorate in Christian Counseling for personal growth and with very limited thoughts about using it in a professional setting. I would still list it on my resume as I applied for jobs within our organization. To me it simply shows that I enjoy learning (which I do) and that I can learn.

Troy State is not that poorly rated as a school. It is a good quality mid range school with a decent graduate program. (BTW I am assuming you are referring to Troy State-Troy, not that Dothan or Montgomery are not also decent). But then CSULA is not as well ranked as CSULB and neither are as well ranked as UCLA or USC.

The point being, I would not omitt Troy State unless you knew the place you where applying had something against the program or degree.
