Does anyone remember the first names of the Bachmans who ran Defender's Seminary in, I believe, Iowa? They moved to Long Beach, CA, and changed the name to Berean Chrisitian College, I believe, and held classes on the Queen Mary. Thanks for your help.

No idea who they are but every time I see the thread title I think of Bachman Turner Overdrive.

BTW, any idea of whether Bethany will consider applying for TRACS accreditation again? My understanding is that they have a campus program, etc.

The last time I corresponded with Dr. (oops, sorry Steve, Mr.) H.D. Shuemake he indicated they will try again since TRACS has accredited American Christian College and Seminary but I haven't heard anything since. I do know Dr. (PhD, Purdue) E.G. Sherman, Bethany Ministry and Theology Chair, has been investigating accreditation with a reputable agency (one recognized by the US Dept. of Ed.) but that's all I know. Of course, as it was so clearly and succinctly pointed out to me by the inimitable Rick Walston, those of us who graduated pre any accreditation, "still graduated from an unaccredited school. " The education is the same, however, pre or post.

I would hope that Bethany would pursue TRACS again. It would certainly add to the credibility of Bethany degrees. Because Bethany has campus programs as well as DL and if I remember they also have a library (etc) there is no reason for them not to pursue it. The school just has to stick to the course for accreditation with tenacity and where deficiencies (compliance issues) are found, ensure they are corrected. American Christian College & Seminary was eventually successful but it did not happen overnight by any means.

As for your situation, maybe they will offer graduates the opportunity to update their degrees?? In any case no one bothers Dr. Charles Stanley or Dr. Stephen Olford because LRS had not been accredited by TRACS at the time they earned their degrees. In fact Stephen Olford has a department Chair named after him (no jokes please) at Beeson(??).

Well, I have no real desire to "update," as I have been able to do pretty much what I wanted to with the Bethany degree. I have been pastor in Congregational Christian Churches, the UCC, Friends, Presbyterian, with both large and small congregations both in the city and in the boonies. I have worked in community mental health and addictions. Bethany never held me back. Currently I am pastor of an independent Chrisitan church and enjoying it very much. I have been here nine weeks and the church has already doubled in Sunday morning attendance. I have no idea what Bethany will do. I have a feeling they will continue as they are as independent Baptists control the school and independent Baptists are very independent minded. Perhaps when the Shuemakes are no longer in control the new administration will see the need and benefits of coming into the world of recognized accreditation. The oddity about me is that I almost went to Faith Seminary in Tacoma and LRS instead of Bethany and now both of these are a TRACS school; ah, "the road not taken."
