I think I have decided on gcu for my phd, but there are a ton of bad reviews online about their counselor turnover and bad finance practices. I am having work pay for my school so I won't need to deal with the finance offic much, but anyone have good or bad experiences with their counsellors?

I don't know about others, but I have great experiences with Capella University's administration. I put the program on hold because of my marriage problems. I plan to move to Walden University for Ph.D in Management. The reason for that because Capella University charges tuition per quarter at flat rate whether one, two, or three courses. At Walden University I have option to pay per course, which I want to take slow to enjoy my life and professional career.

Once I requested information from GCU, I received immediate responses. I think you should contact the school for several times, and if their responses are slow. Then you can tell at the beginning.

So far everyone I have dealt with there has been nice and professional. I just want to make sure I do my due diligence. You are right though,u can find Harvard or other reviews online that are horrible, all from disgruntled students probably.

I facilitate courses for GCU (graduate counseling/psychology). They are in the process of switching from Angel to LoudCloud as their portal and have had some pretty significant bumps in the road. I have had several students threaten to quit the program over their frustration - and what they feel is a lack of customer service during the difficulty.

    Just sayin.

When is this transition supposed to be complete?

Not sure. Some classes switched in the final Fall term. Mine switched in January but I know that others are still using Angel. Just checked my email and the portal had problems 5 times last week. Now they are going dark for 12 hours on Friday night/Saturday morning for another big upgrade.

    Graymatter,

Overall, what is your perception about the course material and quality of course work? I'm interested to know from an instructors option? (I'm assuming that they have a set coursework for each class).

I have facilitated courses for 7 schools. Only 2 of those were graduate programs. For GCU, I have facilitated one of the final courses in their MA Counseling programs. I find it to be really strong in content and application. Feedback from students is that it is one of the more rigorous in their program.

GCU (at least the course I facilitate) requires 3 textbooks though none of them are fully read (in contrast to most courses that are work-through-the-textbook). GCU has "lectures" each week as well (not created by me but by the course author). The content is strong (as noted). The assignments are time-consuming but VERY practical.

The reason that I don't facilitate more for them? To be frank, they expect MORE from faculty than other programs but pay LESS per student per week than the others. Classes are far larger than other programs and assignments are more intense. I stick with them because I like it and I feel good about the content. Its not for the money with GCU.

    Hope that helps.

Yeah an Adjunct position is not for the money (although what little is offered is nice supplemental income).
