First let me thank Lawrie and Kgec for the great advice on a previous thread...

I'm getting started with Excelsior and trying to get a good plan going before enrolling. I currently have a semester worth of credit at a local university. Is there anyway I can find out what proficency test (CLEP, ECE, DANTE, etc.) is equivalent to the courses I already took.

I could use the Credit Review service at Excelsior, but if someone knows of a better solution let me know.

I don't want to take a test and end up finding out later I already had credit for it.

The courses I finished (C or better) according to my transcript.

    ENGLISH 101 - Freshamn English
POLISCI 105 - Global Perspectives - General Ed Social Science
SOCIOGY 105 - Individual and Society - General Ed Social Science
ACINDP 105 - Wold of the Arts - General Ed Arts

    Thanks agian.

My goal is a MIS Business Degree.

    Hi, again, Adam.

You're looking at Excelsior's BMI program, right?

My guess is that English 101 takes care of the Written English requirement, that the POLISCI and SOC would probably take care of two thirds of the social science requirement beyond macro/microeconomics (maybe a psychology CLEP or something like that to finish it off), and the ACINDP would probably take care of a third of the humanities requirement. I don't want to speak for Excelsior, but this stuff is pretty standard.

If I were you, I wouldn't worry anymore about general ed stuff. You've made a good start on it already and, who knows, maybe during the course of your program your old lady will talk you into taking some artsy-fartsy class with her that you can use for credit.

If you're comfortable with your math skills, I'd jump right into preparation for an exam in one of the business core subjects or macro- and microeconomics. If you're really comfortable with your math skills, I'd probably try a statistics exam first. If you're really uncomfortable with the math then I'd start preparing for a general college math (pre-calc) exam.

    Good luck.

The Freshman English may or may not meet the Excelsior 3 credit WER (Written English Requirement), depending on the quantity and standard of essay work (composition) required in the course. POLSCI useful for filler credit, same with SOCIOLOGY 105. ACINDP likely to garner 3 lower level Humanities.

So, while all likely to be useful, I think the only one really helpful if deemed sufficient to meet the WER, is the ENGLISH 101.

You could concentrate on meeting the other general ed and particular Business program non-Business credit requirements, Ethics economics, OB, (as discussed in the other thread, and in the BA in 4 Weeks Business degree guide), then tackle the Business core, then the MIS specialization elements.

Your existing credit, as detailed seems fairly peripheral for the most part (sorry) except for the English. Point is, you can afford to leave that for the moment and concentrate on meeting the other requirements. The Excelsior Business catalog is very good in respect of detailing what proficiency exams will meet which degree requirements.

Also, the Business degree guide exam schedule in BA in 4 Weeks was structured to make the most of study efforts in terms subject overlap, based on my personal experience doing the Business degree. For the majority of the MIS degree, the requirements are as those for all other Business degrees.

    Great info guys, thanks...

I'm finally getting the hang of this, and am putting together a plan of attack.

I still don't understand how the GRE fits into this, but from reading the BA in 4 weeks site, it doesn't seem neccessary.

Looks like I can keep myself busy for awhile just working on the core requirments. I'll worry more about overlap later. I don't think any of the 4 classes I have credit for will overlap with any requirements anyway. I'll try and squeeze some info from Excelsior regarding the Freshman english class.

One quick question that I'm sure you two know. If I want to take an ECE test, do I have to enrolled? It seems to require some authorization.

    Thanks again...

No, there is no requirement that you be an Excelsior student, or indeed, a student at all. The "authorization to test", is a document you receive once you have "done" the paper work and paid the fees. It is your ticket at the Prometrix/Sylvan test site.
