It's a "Christian" University of Phoenix. Investors snapped up a dying campus in Arizona, brought on leadership with UOP experience, and injected a UOP-style online program. These things solved the economic issues, but it's still a for-profit, so that may make some people nervous.

An advantage is that if you aren't immediately in the area, people might not be as familiar with GCU, so it may not have the instant negative name recognition that UOP has.

Over the years I've paid very little attention to Grand Canyon and I'm not really sure why that is the case. They have a lot of DL programs on multiple degree levels. I know of no scandals or big problems with the school administration. I have not checked but I suspect that the costs are on the high side of normal. Some people get their education paid by employers or as a result of military benefits and so the cost may not be a big deal. It's regionally accredited and so there's a decent level of quality in the product that they're selling. If they're offering a program that is "hard to find" then you might think it's worth it to pay the extra money but if you're looking for a rather generic degree (like an MBA) then I can't think of a reason why you'd pay more for Grand Canyon that you would for a degree from some school like Troy or Peru or some other local state university. In short, I don't think there's anything "wrong" with a GCU degree but neither do I think that there's anything "preferred" about this school.

I went to see a basketball game at GCU a few days ago with my family. They have a brand new gym. They are building a large residential building on campus. It is more than an online only school. I just do not like the fact that it is a for-frofit university.

It has pretty mixed reviews over at onlinedegreereviews.org, how much stock you put into those is up to you ...

Similar reviews at studentsreview.com ... again, these are not exactly definitive ... ex, disgruntled failed students are probably more likely to write reviews than successful hardworking students ...

    What program/course are you considering?

I considered GCU briefly for their Masters in Counseling program but then was told they couldn't work with me because of the state I lived in at the time. I don't like that they are for profit though and that was a deciding factor for me.

  9. Hmm very nice thread. I heard good things about GCU.

I can't say how well the reputation is, but I have been to the campus and they are investing a lot of money into the University, the new Arena has lots of big events held, the Phoenix Suns are have their training camp held there. The schools has held an exhibition basketball game with Arizona State University there. The band Lady Antebellum performed there. They are building two more dorms, a new 4 story arts and sciences building that is going to house a high tech DNA analysis lab for the forensics program. It has a 6 lane under ground bowling alley, There are fast food restaurant above the bowling alley. they have a new student rec center. It is becoming like a small city. Unfortunately they have attempted to buy more land around the school but businesses are not taking the offer that Grand Canyon University is offering them. So that is why GCU is trying to build up hence the 4 story arts and science building. The school is on 90 acres of land. They are trying to get their athletics to NCAA division I, they are currently NCAA Division II. I think that there reputation should be good. They sponsor a lot of events locally. I plan on getting a Doctorates in Business Administration there. Their nursing program is really good, they had the highest pass rate on the state nursing exam, higher then Arizona State University.

I just found this school and Im trying to decide between Walden and GCU for my PhD in I/O Pysch. I am worried about how GCU will look on the resume since no one has really heard of it and the name does suggest it is a 'lessor' school. I know that isnt a way to choose a school, just worried about how potential employers or teaching positions may view it in the future. I know they have RA as well as Walden, I guess I need a few success stories or stats to help me pull the trigger

They seem to have good programs, but the online degree review sites are heavily laden with horror stories about campus administration for their DL programs. Proceed with caution, I'd say.

There are quite a bit of horror stories about their admin, it's hard to know what's true and who are disgruntled students who just didn't pass trying to cause a fuss

I would say "believe the horror stories about admin at any school that has many complaints in this area." If you look at reviews from the well rated schools, you do not see such horror stories. The negative reviewers at these schools tend to be negative about distance learning in general. Cal Coast has very high ratings, and I do not remember seeing many admin complaints.

    Nuff said.

    1. We are online students.
    2. Having money does not equate to being a quality institution of learning.

    1. I hope you enjoy your program.
    2. Number of Arizona State students who took the state nursing exam last year: 1213
    3. Number of GCU students who took the state nursing exam last year: 7

I think no reputation is a good thing. Its not as good as a good reputation but atleast it isn't bad. Maybe it is due to the fact the program is new?

You're correct on both counts, but you forget that to average folks all that "stuff" tends to lend an air of legitimacy. Often it's them average folks who are looking at resumes, or fielding interviews.

Then I'll just hang my hat on the old standby accepted by even those living in Arizona.. "Everything from Arizona just sucks."

vpst00 - Did you end up starting the DBA program at GCU? What are you initial impressions? Do you feel it is a quality program? Any items of interest you feel I should be aware of?
