    Hi,
I'm currently a junior in my undergraduate study, and I really want to join the Peace Corps after I graduate. The Peace Corps offers some awesome scholarship opportunities once the service is completed. Some of their partner universities offer full ride master's degrees in everything from Biology to English. Since, of course, money will probably be quite an issue for...well, a really long time for me, I was wondering if anyone knows if you can transfer credits from a Master's degree in Biology to any medical school towards an MD?

    From UMass Medical School:

    "Transfers and Advanced Standing

Transfer students are only considered for third year to fill the few vacancies resulting from withdrawal from the school by previously enrolled students. Students interested in the possibility of transferring to this school should direct inquiries to the Admissions Office. Transfer applications are accepted January 1-April 1 of the year the applicant is seeking transfer.

Information regarding availability of transfers, application forms, and instructions for applying, will be sent to all potential applicants. It should be noted that the same residency requirements must be met as for those students entering the first year and we will consider transfers students from Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) accredited medical schools only.

Request a transfer application: [email protected]

UPDATE AS OF 10/4/2011: We have determined that we will be UNABLE to consider transfer applicants for the incoming class of 2012"

To me this looks like they are not really interested in having people take courses elsewhere and then transferring the credits. They might accept a transfer from another medical school but I'm thinking that standard Biology grad credits are not going to cut it. Other schools may have alternative policies.

A friend was working on a master's in biomedical studies in an effort to improve his chances at getting into med school. I seem to recall him saying that many first year med courses would be waived. I suspect that each med school will have their own policy on this.

Only slightly off-topic, but pertinent. I really like the idea of the Peace Corps and helping others, but I hear too many stories of assaults on PC volunteers that are either not acknowledged or covered up by PC administration. There is apparently also a lack of support, moral or otherwise, for PC voluteers who have been assaulted.

I'm not afraid to the street, but I look both ways. Join the Peace Corps if that is your desire, but do so with eyes wide open.
