I know AJU has changed names, but I have just been informed by Excelsior that they will accept the courses I took there as transfer credit. Initially, they rejected them but when I appealed they asked me to send the course transcripts. AJU did that for me, and my courses were accepted.

Excellent! So are you going to finish with Excelsior?

Yes, I am. I am 37 credits away from my BA. I had to put things on hold last year after my son and his family moved in with me and I supported them. Now they are back out on their own and I'm working to finish what I started. It has been a long hard road, but at least I can see the finish line!

How are you planning on knocking out those last 37 credits?

I am taking five DSST exams, one course at Louisiana State University, two courses at Brigham Young, one course at the University of North Dakota, one Ohio University exam, one Thomas Edison State College exam, and two Algebra courses with ALEKS.

The plan has been approved by Excelsior, so now I just have to knock out the credits. I'm starting with the DSST exams first.

Please let us know how it goes as you get closer to graduation. I think it is inspiring to a lot of us to see others piece together enough college credit to graduate.

It was a frustrating experience for me when I was piecing together my bachelor's degree. I wish I'd had someone to serve as an example. I transferred classes from a couple of different schools before graduating with nearly 200 undergraduate credit hours for what was supposed to be a 120-credit-hour degree.

We're all cheering for you! You may be more of an inspiration to others than your realize.

Long-time members like Abner probably remember that my quest for a BA has been going on since 2005. Since that time:

I enrolled at Penn Foster College and completed a semester. I left during the second semester when I realized that the marketing degree program I was in was heavier on business than PR/marketing, and I was taking classes that I didn't really need, like accounting. During this time, my wife became disabled, so that also cut down on the amount of time I could study.

I then enrolled in Andrew Jackson University's BA in Communications program and completed a semester with a 4.0 GPA. I had enrolled under the sponsored tuition program, which was a great deal, but DETC strictly limit the amount of assessment credit such as CLEP and DSST exams you can transfer into their programs.

I realized I could complete my program faster at Excelsior. They accepted almost all the credit from my military service training, plus my Penn Foster College course. I had to appeal to get my AJU courses accepted. Shortly after enrolling at Excelsior, I was hit with the double whammy of my son's family moving in with me after he and his wife lost their jobs, plus a pipe burst and flooded my home. We spent the whole summer of 2010 living in a hotel. Ultimately, we had to find a new home.

So that brings me to 2012, and 37 credits away from my BA. I'll be able to knock out the DSST exams the fastest, but I have to work everything into my budget as I am paying for everything out of pocket. I'm not making any predictions as to when I will finish because as I have learned over the past 7 years you never know what life will throw at you. Still, I hope to complete most, if not all, of my remaining requirements this year.

Thanks, Abner. I have had to put things on hold in the past, but have never considered quitting. My reasoning is if our troops can complete DL degrees from war zones in Afghanistan and Iraq, I have no excuse not to finish mine.

    Hi Tcord,

Sorry to bring up this old thread, but I was wondering if by chance Excelsior ever mentioned to you how many NA credits they'll accept for transfers? I seem to remember reading years ago that the limit was 30, but perhaps that was in reference to a different school. Of course, I also remember there was a time when Excelsior just wouldn't take them at all, so this is good news!

I don't have a problem with the appeals process if RA schools want to do that. It just gives NA students who deserve a shot a chance to prove that they're just as capable of doing the work as any other student.

Something I think worth pointing out-- given the above it appears that while DETC isn't perfect, they do impose certain limitations to achieve their expected educational outcomes. I believe it might be worth keeping in mind when considering the value of DETC-accredited programs.

Yeah, but no accreditor is perfect, and they all impose limits of some sort. Anyone who would've thought otherwise concerning the DETC was probably too far biased anyway to give any credence to this particular instance.

I believe that I was the one that first went through the appeal process to have NA credits excepted at EC from here. It was a long process then that took about 3-4 months from what I remember.

I wasn't informed of any limit on the NA credits. In fact, when I submitted my degree completion plan with the AJU credits listed, I got a note back from my adviser stating "you can't take AJU courses because they are not regionally accredited." I pointed out that their school's policy is that courses from NA schools are considered on a course-by-course basis, and that I had already taken the courses. They responded by asking me for the syllabus of each course, and the transcripts, which AJU sent for me. It did take about three months, but I was ultimately informed that the AJU courses were accepted.

My degree completion plans are on hold yet again because I have to pay for my son's high school program at Ashworth first, plus my wife's health took a turn for the worse. Even with insurance, the prescription drugs are expensive.

EC has a policy that they will only consider uo to 25% of NA credits towards degree requirements. So yes, 30 credits is the max that you can transfer towards a degree.

Thanks for the information, TCord! I'm really sorry to hear about the life situations. It seems like every time I start a project some kind of mess like this happens for me too. Its clockwork arrival almost seems like something wants to prevent us sometimes, smh.

I'm really interested in religious studies, especially some coursework in comparative religions, so I'm keeping a close eye on the Nations University accreditation situation. I suppose we'll hear in mid-June since they have a meeting scheduled for then. A $250/year Bachelors sounds like a good cure for the tuition price issues many are having. There are courses in the degree that are non-religious and can be applied to other fields in transfer. Plus, I hear a lot of students are getting into grad programs with this degree even while it's unaccredited, so people needing to go for a Master's can certainly benefit.

Thanks, skidadl. Yeah, that sounds familiar. I can't remember where I heard it first years ago, but it must've been on this board.

That's still pretty good. For folks who can't find cheap or otherwise accessible programs to transfer in, there's another option.
