    Hey,

I'm looking for a College Algebra class. Trick is there can't be an assessment prior to entry. BYU Independent Study seems like it may work, but I am looking for alternatives. Preferably less than $500. Must be RA.

Can't be straighterline, and local CC won't work. I know about DSST/CLEP and that is also an option but I want to see if I can find an actual course with an instructor.

Any ideas? This is for my daughter who has a stellar GPA and will graduate with her AA in May if she can squeeze in the 3 credits in College Algebra somewhere (her school is a no go as she missed the cutoff on entry to the course by a few points). She earned 3 credits from the College math CLEP but missed the additional 3 credits by a couple points, she needed a 62 for that.

    Any ideas?

Excelsior College meets all of your requirements except for price. Excelsior's classes don't have any proctored exams either. It's worth looking into even though it's more than you want to spend.

Well Clovis Community College comes to mind - but you have to take the Accuplacer. Clovis will set up the Accuplacer at a remote site if they have 3 days notice.

If she just missed the cutoff, can't she retake?

Thanks for all the responses, excellent ideas! Moslty the cost is just a killer, she can do the BYU for around $500 and it looks pretty good, so I guess I'm trying to beat that price point.

Bruce, the lead on U of Arkansas was exactly what I was hoping to find, that may just work, thanks!

    AV8R and Major...thanks, I didn't know about those!

Shawn, she can re-take it.....and has. Needed a 121 on what's called the PERT exam she got a 115 then a 117. Since she is dual enrolled HS/College the College is very inflexible. She also passed the College Math CLEP with a 57 and picked up 3credits, but needed a 62 to get the other three 3cr required for graduation. Unfortunately she took this CLEP late in December and we have been unable to make any plans as her school was closed over the holidays....that's why we are scrambling now. I suspect that she could just continue with aleks and then clep or dsst out in a couple of months, but I am hoping for a better guarantee (thus looking for a class). All of the public colleges in Florida are out due to regulations related to her dual enrollment status, they will however accept select credits from other schools. We considered Clovis and NMJC but the accuplacer gave us pause compared to BYU who will just let her sign up.

This shouldn't be an issue except that she has done so well assembling all her credits that she can actually graduate with her AA a week after she finishes HS. She took full advantage of the college CLEP policy with some 36 or so credits while maintaining a 4.0 in everything she has taken from the college including French and Chemistry. I'm pulling out all the stops to help her realize the goal of graduating in May because she has done her part exceptionally well.

It's funny really...she shouldn't technically have been admitted to the Chemistry course due to the math placement,we just got lucky with an airhead adviser. We get the runaround every semester at sign up time. I leave the guidance office shaking my head and laughing at the incredible ineptitude we encounter. There are literally several answers to every question. We wouldn't be there except that the classes are free other than the cost of books.
